Are they just "grifting"... or outright stealing, with full knowledge that what they are doing is wrong. Would they not scream to high heaven if others were doing what they are doing?

Hypocrisy is not a pretty thing. I wouldn't call it active ignorance. I think they know what they are doing is wrong, and they have gone to unprecedented levels of wrong. They just don't care. And that's the real sin.
