Technology, ideally, should reduce the amount of human effort needed to "get stuff done." It should reduce the human workload, and in particular those tasks which can be accomplished without human (direct) action, freeing us to accomplish things that cannot be accomplished (or not as well) without human input. Technology as the potential to completely eliminate the "economics of scarcity" from human society. It can act as the greatest liberating force in human history.

Will it? Probably not. Our technology is progressing FAR faster than human society itself, and at present is mostly used to dull us into complacency and make a tiny handful of us absurdly wealthy.
