Total state taxes and fees vary a lot depending on where you fill up.
I note that the biggest gripers about gasoline taxes are from Californians.
Highest Gas Tax States
California: ~73.6 cents per gallon (highest in the nation)
Illinois: ~70.4 cents per gallon
Indiana: ~63.1 cents per gallon
Pennsylvania & Washington: Around 58–59 cents per gallon
Lowest Gas Tax States
Alaska: ~8.95 cents per gallon (lowest in the nation)
Hawaii: ~18.5 cents per gallon
New Mexico: ~18.9 cents per gallon
