If there is no loan and you own the house outright, then insurance is not mandatory. I’m self-insured. But I cannot get a homeowners policy in my region due to being off the grid. And forget about fire insurance. My story: I bought a house two years ago in another state. Paid cash. Six months later a landslide destroyed four houses, mine included. I did have a homeowners policy. But due to the exclusion clause regarding earth movement I was denied coverage. I ate the loss. Was referred to as an act of God. Strange how the insurance industry invokes God as if it actually believes God is for for real. LOLS:-))))
