I got scammed!!

Someone used my bank account to buy stuff from an Internet site recently. It happened between May to July my bank said. This is why I haven't posted here a lot recently. I got my money back, too.

Scam, hackers, theives abound.

Technology has granted them abilities that they didn't have before. And our global economy means we are vulnerable on a global scale now, and not just national (which was bad enough).

No matter how cautious you try to be, you still have to watch your back. And even then. . .

I hate being this paranoid. But sometimes, its justified.

Glad you recovered your money.

My account was hack and the ‘bank robbers’ got away with $270,000. And almost got another $90,000 but the bank stopped that. Yes, my money was restored by the bank. Another hack was my brokerage account. They came within a hairs breath of getting another $250,000 within a 24 hours window. The transfer was for a Friday and the broker stopped payment on Thursday. So I know a bit about this plague. It’s considered bank robbery. The penalty is 30 to 60 years in prison. The banks don’t want the pubic/depositors to realize just how vulnerable their digital firewalls are. My other plague is phone scammers. Today I had 15 calls from India and Pakistan. Their names are Mike, Larry, George, laughable. Sometimes I shine them on. Other times I just say F off. If you want a good laugh, search out Scamming the Scammers where computer geniuses here in the US hack the scammers, get into their account, cameras, their native names, call center locales, and even wreck (malware) their call center computer networks.

Scams, hacking, data breaches - it goes on all the time. Technology can be a wonderful thing - once upon a time medicine only had x-rays, blood test, clinical picture, and as a last resort exploratory surgery. Now we have CATs, MRI, Ultrasounds. . . great stuff.

OTOH technology means we as individuals are a lot more vulnerable. A good deal of criminals are pretty darn smart... . . and incredibly persistent. I have already been notified more than once that my medical records and all the sensitive info contained therein has been breached. We had our Discover credit card number stolen (to this day we don't know how) but lucky for us it was caught and we shut down the account pronto. To this day we never reopened the account under another number.

SS numbers were never meant to be used as a form of ID but now everyone's social is all over the place. We locked down our social security numbers because of it.

No one's money/accounts are totally safe and/or private. Such is our times.

Only use a credit card to pay online. Never use debit or a bank account:

Yup - both my husband and I only use our credit card of which we have only one.

Devo, I am glad that you got your money back. I had a stolen check book, but my bank protected me, so I was lucky as well.

Using PO drop boxes around here has be come a problem. They have been raided

and checks have been stolen.

Of course, online payments aren't always that safe either.
