So they are, in fact, "real". The entire value of diamonds comes from the strict control of the industry by a few companies, making them "rare".

I am in favor of anything that makes these ethically questionable companies lose money.

There are subtle internal differences that gemologists use to distinguish them:

Growth Patterns: Natural diamonds typically grow in eight-sided octahedral patterns.

Lab-grown diamonds, depending on the method, may exhibit different patterns:

HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): Often shows a combination of cubic and octahedral faces, resulting in a cross-shaped growth pattern.

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition): Grows layer-by-layer, sometimes creating a "stack of pancakes" appearance under specialized equipment.

Inclusions: Lab-grown diamonds may contain specific metallic inclusions from the manufacturing flux (HPHT) or small dark particles (CVD) that differ from the mineral inclusions found in natural diamonds.

Trace Elements: Most natural diamonds contain trace amounts of nitrogen, which is often absent in lab-grown diamonds.

I have studied the lattice structures and chemical compounds of crystals: diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire, tourmaline, citrine, garnet, peridot, spinel, zircon, mossanite, onyx, opal, alexandrite, tanzanite, topaz, morganite, amethyst, aquamarine, quartz, etc.

I understand the processes that natural stones go thru for enhancement. For example, natural Tanzanite is brownish, and turns "blurple" with heat treatment. Laser, irradiation and other processes and substances are used on certain stones for cosmetic enhancement. Emeralds most always have natural cracks, and epoxy, polymers and other compounds are impregnated to minimize the appearance of the fissures. As a result, you never want to steam clean them or they might fall apart.

I am familiar with the various cuts of stones: brilliant (traditional 58 facet), emerald, princess, cushion, pear, heart, oval, marquise, radiant, baguette, trillion, asscher, teardrop, cabochon, old mine, trapezoid, fan, many others, and proprietary cuts like "Lucida" 50 facet, "Ashoka" 62 facets, "Eternal" 81 facets, "Elara" 61 facets, "Sunburst" 145 facets, "ZigZag" , "Dreamscape".

The different cuts will have different yields, thus affecting the price.

I am familiar with stone cutting techniques and principles, and the anatomy of a cut stone ("lapidary science"): table, pavilion, girdle, culet, etc. Optimal angles, depths, etc. Color grades. Clarity grades. Fluorescence.

Reminds me of sparkling wines, and Champagne. The issue is label authenticity. The patented lab ‘diamond’ is usurping the term ‘diamond’. If I wore the fake lab bling cufflinks I would know it’s not from a diamond mine. “Those cufflinks are beautiful. Are they real diamonds. Not really, they were made in a lab”. So it comes down to personal preference. I still see it as a cheat.

They have identical chemical, physical, and optical properties but differ in origin, rarity, and cost, with lab diamonds offering significant savings for larger stones but having much lower resale value than their natural counterparts.

Both are graded by the same 4Cs (Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat) and offer sparkle, but natural diamonds hold traditional sentimental value and long-term investment potential, while lab diamonds appeal to budget-conscious and ethically-focused buyers

Seawater is dynamic in composition, and changes with the natural flows around the globe.

Your home-brewed salt water might have salt from mines below Lake Erie, or Himalayan pink salt, or sea salt from a specific location, or from some other source and composition.

They will all be different in chemical analysis. Some will have bromides. Some will have iodides. Some will have mercury. Some will have whale urine. Who knows?

Lab grown diamonds are cheap knockoffs of natural diamonds.

France was successful in making "roquefort" and "champagne" proprietary trade names, ending the ability of other nations to market knockoffs using those names.

I hope the powers that be make the term "diamond" proprietary and force the labbies to use a different term other than "diamond", like "damnonds" or "deamonds" or "shillite".

Again, your lack of precision is astonishing for the "smartest" ass on the board.

Would there be a specific quality or qualities that would lead us to consider the natural diamonds to have a far greater value? Or would we say that it wasn't worth the effort to dig them up since it was easy enough to make all we needed or wanted in the lab?

Just look at the prices of vintage and current Tiffany and Cartier items on eBay, Etsy, Poshmark, Ross-Simons, The RealReal, Yoougi's Closet, Oak Gem, 1stdibs, and hundreds of other secondary marketers ... and the items sell quickly. Watch them over time and you will see quickly-rising prices. Sellers tend to peg their prices at 50-70% of Tiffany and Cartier ever-rising retail prices.

A Jean Schlumberger "Olive" 18K Cufflink Set sold for $1900 not long ago at Tiffanys ... they now sell for $8600 at T&Co ... eBayers are asking $5000+ for used sets, and they probably paid less than $1000 for them a few years ago. It's a huge and serious market out there. Lots of money to be made knowledgeable, energetic folks.

Yes, some "ego-driven sucker" will buy this USED 16.39 carat Tiffany & Co. diamond ring for $1,785,000, and you can bet the original owner didn't pay anywhere near that price:
