Some people criticize Musk for investing in space travel instead of focusing on making our home planet better. He addresses those complaints here:

when the Industrial Revolution began, when electricity and the
telephone were invented, when Wilbur and Orville began to fly,
when atomic energy was discovered, when the computer technology and its follow ons arrived, etc. People’s first reactions seem to be, “What does this mean to me?”

Depending on the mindset it will either be fear or faith. It’s understandable because (it seems to me) each new discovery is grander and significantly more powerful than the previous one. Just as the prospects for great advances bring great hope, the opposite is true for the equally powerful negative possibilities.
I think I’d be on the more fearful side if I believed that it all depended on man alone. But I don’t, and I look to the good.

As far as Elon Musk and his motives and contributions, no one has contributed more to help humanity, whether it’s job creation, scientific advancement on several levels, or vision for the future.

I think his value exceeds three trillion and do not deny his so-called “right” to it. I’m always fascinated when the criticism for those who actually help humanity with their efforts and discoveries far exceed the criticism of Americans who pour millions into celebrities in sports and entertainment.

As I suggested before the “what’s in it for me?” mindset seems to short circuit more important considerations.IMO

Not everyone has the luxury to wake up in the morning full of wide eye wonder dreaming about what will happen next in space exploration. Many are struggling just to survive. Sounds like EM is thinking like the rich cat that he is. Besides, SpaceX has gone public and will be open to trading on the NASDAQ soon if its not already. My guess is he wants investors interested in his company. So yeah he is marketing. And we in the US continue with war, with a collapsing health care system, with overly greedy corporations, with Social Security and Medicare problems, with housing issues, with increasing food prices.

Colonization of other worlds, even our own Moon, isn't exactly a possibility right now. Finding an inhabitable world that can sustain our life is even more problematic if not impossible at our stage of development. I don't know if it will ever be possible considering the vastness of distances in this universe. Besides we'd just take our problems with us. Fix what is wrong here before we decide to go and ruin another world.

Greedy corporations will always be greedy. I think our laws and regulations are the main problem.

We have too many tax loopholes that let the rich avoid taxes.

USA is supposed to be a democracy, but we let rich corporations make big political donations and we let them have too much influence on our politicians.

Elon Musk also makes electric vehicles. His EV success is even encouraging competing car makers to make their own EV's. That is helping improve air quality here on Earth.

That's why regulation of corporate behavior is in the best interest of society. Largely unfettered free-market capitalism might sound good (to some), but in practice, it's no less a disaster than gross over-regulation.

These bright boys and girls are inculcated, obsessed with the curiosity of the proverbial cat. They seem to think we should genuflect to the science god, a god that at its very foundation is about war technology servicing Baal abd Baphomet.

It’s forced on us. Most of the gadgets began at the Pentagon. Then push them on us and force sold to us at outrageous profits. Evolution from hell. We buy the bright and shiny crap just like monkeys. We assume the “advances” are a good thing. It’s not. Our enslavement is built into the techno paradigm. Should have stopped the clock at 1950.

They never have enough. Corporations and politicians have each others back. One hand washes the other. Changing the laws won't happen by corporate or political choice.
