Why Drivers Hit Cyclists They Clearly See:

Sometimes it's target fixation. Drivers and bicycle riders should look where the want to go, instead of staring at the obstacle they are trying to avoid.

When I ride my mountainbike on a rocky dirt road, I don't stare at the rocks or cliffs. I visualize a path between all the rocks and I follow that path.

Drivers and cyclists should share the road, but sometimes a lane is too narrow for them to share. When that happens, it's legal for the cyclist to ride in the center of the lane.

We have a number of problems around here which are getting worse.

1. Aggressive arrogant drivers who have no patience or tolerance for anyone else. They drive as if traffic laws were meant for anyone but them.

2. Roads with multiple lanes often speed limits of 40-45 mph and no shoulders forcing cyclists to use the side walk or take their chances in fast moving traffic.

3. Twisting, turning country back roads with no shoulder and no guard rails and no street lights. In fact we have very few street lights around here no matter where you go.

4. Cyclists who ride side by side instead of single file on narrow winding roads.

5. People riding ebikes swinging and swerving from sidewalk into the right lane of traffic and back on the sidewalk ignoring traffic lights and traffic controls signs and failing to yield to people walking on sidewalks or in crosswalks. They ride like they are in a pinball machine or something.

6. We have no shortage of air heads and people not paying any attention to what they are doing. That goes for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. And don't get me going on idiot kids on skate boards.

7. Impatient vacationers.

8. Add to this the deep pot holes that are developing and not being fixed which force drivers if they can't straddle to dodge along with cyclists dodging as well.

9. I think the 40mph club is headquartered here. Their members are dedicated to driving 40 mph regardless of where they are, in parking lots or highways. It's all the same to them.

And this is not a city but a town mixed with residential developments of single family homes, condos, farmland and parks. Once a week we hear the sounds of police and emergency vehicle sirens. Drive into our nearby cities and the road system is inadequate for the population and current growth adding to driver frustration and traffic snarls.

It is something else you have to watch out for.

Amish E-Bikes are a real problem here

With the second largest group of Amish in the world in our county, their adopting E-Bikes is starting to cause real problems here.

I almost hit a couple yesterday on the way home from church yesterday. I followed for close to a mile at around 25 mph up and down hills hoping to get around them at the top of a hill, but they would take off once they got over the top and I had to wait for the next one. Then when they got over the top of a hill and I was ready to pass, they made a left hand turn in front of me, signaling only after they were perpendicular to the road.

They don't know and don't follow highway rules. They run stop signs, make unsignaled turns and ride on the road instead of the buggy lane. (extra wide pavement on the other side of the edge line). If they come to a stop light and there is a line of traffic, they will ride the berm to get to the front.

Never pass a bike when there is a lane or road on the left up ahead. They just might turn and you will kill them.

The sheriff won't cite them, but the state highway patrol will. The county is afraid to do anything drastic because they are the reason for all the tourism here. But, every week or so, a few people are injured and some even killed. We just have to be less in a hurry.

There have been community meetings, but nothing has been done. If nothing is done, the state will step in and make them get licenses, and they sure won't like that.

It's a common behavior of a lot of E-Bike operators, not specifically an Amish behavior.

It is sheer numbers

Amish make up very close to 50% of the population of Holmes County. They are expected to be the majority very soon. That is 20,000 potential E-bikes on the roads, including state highways. It is a big problem.

I've seen 10 year old's and probably younger on the state highway in front of my house. But I suppose that isn't too much worse than the same kids in a pony cart with a pony that wants to go where it wants to go.
