A few thoughts
Regarding Obama, I think he expelled a tremendous amount of political capital to get the ACA over the line, and I think history will prove that to be a good decision. I also think he made a huge miscalculation with regards to the ability to work with the opposition to make bipartisan legislation. With that being said, I think that Biden learned a lot from the mistakes of Obama which has allowed him to be more effective. I also think that a lot of Biden's legislation has been driven by the need of the crisis like nature of the times we live in. Previous Message But on the other hand, I think his administration has been more effective and accomplished more than Obama did, despite Obama being much younger and very sharp. And this despite Obama having a veto proof majority at the beginning of his term. So either Biden is a lot sharper and more effective behind closed doors than he comes across in public (possible), his team is a lot better (very possible), or it’s just not that important for the president to be really sharp/quick, if he has good instincts and a good team (extremely likely.) So it’s good fodder for comedians, but where the rubber meets the road, it hasn’t seemed to matter much, at least do far. The one issue I think he’s really mishandled, the Israeli invasion of Gaza, I think is more about him being a long time beltway insider, rather than anything to do with age. Maybe his age led him to miscalculate politically, about the relative strength of pro-Israel sentiment in the public and among Democrats. Although it’s hard to know for sure on that—he’d have faced a ton of heat if he’d held Israel’s feet to the fire in any significant way, just from a different direction. On a related note, if Republicans had supported the proposed border security bill, Biden would also have made major progress on two of Trump’s signature issues, border security and trade/industrial policy, far far more than Trump accomplished on either during his term.
