Drumset/Percussion…started in the 4th grade or so, still active.

Technically started with piano a bit younger. Played drums all through junior high and high school in all varieties…concert setting (made All-State in percussion) drumset (jazz at school, rock bands with friends), and marching band drumming. Played snare for the Illini Drumline for 3 years and then started teaching HS drumlines my senior year at Illinois. This coming year will be my 28th year teaching HS drumline. Also teach the starting percussionists in our district, and the junior high drumline. Still do some private lessons here and there over the school year…I have a 20+ student lesson studio over the summer. Been (and continues to be) a huge part of my life. I don’t play as much drumset as I’d like (too damn busy), but would love to get back into that once my kids are all off at college. My drumset needs some significant financial commitment to be back up and running well.  Previous Message

I was introduced to the trumpet in 4th or 5th grade and played it for a couple of years. Never very well.
I suspect lots of us did via our schools
