Picked up an acoustic guitar a few years back and started tinkering around with some helpful tips from MtHood. Didn’t really have the time with the kids activities to make it last or to do it properly. Revisited a few months ago now that I have more time and I’m making my way through some beginner online courses. Can play some easy songs with D/A/E/G chords now and I’m really hooked. I find it very relaxing and good for me mentally. Currently researching some new acoustics after playing some in guitar center with slightly higher nut widths (that’s what she said). I could get lost all day in researching tonewoods, bracing, different manufacturers, etc. This might develop into a problem Previous Message Did / do you play an instrument? have since upgraded to one that is nicer than anything someone at my level should own. It didn't take long before I realized that Scruggs style banjo is one of the hardest instruments to learn, especially for someone who has no musical background. I'm still working on it though.

Technically started with piano a bit younger. Played drums all through junior high and high school in all varieties…concert setting (made All-State in percussion) drumset (jazz at school, rock bands with friends), and marching band drumming. Played snare for the Illini Drumline for 3 years and then started teaching HS drumlines my senior year at Illinois. This coming year will be my 28th year teaching HS drumline. Also teach the starting percussionists in our district, and the junior high drumline. Still do some private lessons here and there over the school year…I have a 20+ student lesson studio over the summer. Been (and continues to be) a huge part of my life. I don’t play as much drumset as I’d like (too damn busy), but would love to get back into that once my kids are all off at college. My drumset needs some significant financial commitment to be back up and running well. Previous Message Did / do you play an instrument? Still play, but definitely not like I use to. I was able to play almost any piece. Not well but was able to play it. Now, my sight reading is not great and coordination is off. Still play piano and guitar regularly. Piano and keyboards for fun at home, guitar at our church on Sundays. If needed, I could probably play the bass at church, but another member of our ensemble plays, so I don't have to. Started piano lessons at about 8. Played organ at church in grade school.
