Regarding the youth travel team...
My youngest daughter played travel basketball the prior two years with a friend. All the tournaments were in the Midwest, so drivable, but did require a couple of night stays at times. Her friend's family treated every one of these tournaments as a mini vacation, while we typically would reign in expenses at times. They also thought it was completely insane that we dare miss a tournament for a "real" family vacation to Mexico or Yellowstone each of the two seasons they played together. At the end of the day, my kid doesn't want to play college ball and so far is ahead of their kid in the HS program, so what does it matter. And yeah, we did quite a bit of hotel lobby drinking to pass the time. Previous Message ...and I let him just kinda choose what he wanted to do. That said, the hotel we stayed at had a team of travel softball players staying there. I think someone here was big into travel sports. The parents were fine / ok but I cannot at all fathom that being what I do on a regular basis. They also all seemed to get shitfaced every night and piece the night together in the AM. Previous Message you ain't much fun since I quit drinking. Previous Message I'm not drinking 4 tall beers at the airport bar on a flight delay. I'm not finding a cool cocktail bar or brewery or winery wherever it is I'm going. Unlike alcohol, there's only so much new food you can eat on a trip...like physically. Previous Message Previous Message ...that after a few days, I'd rather be at home. I've worked pretty hard to set things up pretty much the way I like them. I like to cook my own food. I like to drink my own coffee and sit in my back yard in the fog. I like to listen to my own records and noodle around with my guitars. After about 3-4 days I just wanna go home. Previous Message This year it just made me realize how much I dislike my job and resentful of having to work and wishing I was retired or at least somewhere else. Too bad the job market is a smoking hole in the ground for white collar workers, so there’s zero chance of getting another job anywhere, even taking a two level demotion and pay cut.
