Yes, we stayed in Tulum (so not a resort) and drove to Chichen Itza and had a late lunch in
Valladolid. We left Tulum at the ass crack of dawn to get to the ruins as soon as they opened. I thought the ruins were very cool and well worth the drive. We had our own car the week we were in Tulum so it made these side trips worthwhile  Previous Message is it worth it? We are heading down to Cancun next week, and I've always wanted to take a day trip there. It would just be me, as the family doesn't really have any interest.
