Why does it make any more/less sense than Latavia/Estonia/Lithuania....or in terms of government, Turkey or Hungary?

As for NATO, it all depends. Do you actually want to deter aggression from a Russian regime that thinks it has a right to annex as much of Ukraine as it wants? Then I think membership is overdue.

OTOH, if you want Ukraine an its people to serve as a buffer zone/no man's land between Europe and Russia so we get exactly the bloodbath we are witnessing right now, then no, NATO membership probably doesn't make sense.
