The main thing is to get the funding back so that the work that was promised to students when they enrolled at NW can be done. The main goal of the university is the students that are there.

It sucks, but most people have figured out the only way to fight Trump is in protracted legal battles that can take years. So do you do that, when it means that thousands of students are going to be completely screwed? Or do you cave and wait out the next four years until things get normal again?

It's a tough call, but calling NW officials "cowards" doesn't even begin to acknowledge the complexity of the situation.

I'm not saying this is ideal. I'm not saying that it's normal. Trump is a stupid bully fuck, and fuck him.

It was a terrible position for any university to be in. But they figured out a way to not have to tell all their research students "hey, sorry, but you're completely fucked...good luck transferring to a place that will allow you to get the research hours you need to apply for grad school, finish grad school, or get your doctorate."

And if you have a way for these universities that get targeted to get Trump to stop in a timeframe that allows them to keep the commitments to their students, then feel free to speak up and show them (and this board) the way to do it. I'm sure those universities would love to avoid the problem all together.

Unless your solution is to just spout bullshit platitudes that don't fix the issue.

I’m curious to hear your legal strategy for fighting and “winning” these kinds of battles.

Even if you did win (which you wouldn’t), you are putting 100s of millions in future funding at risk as well, since any litigation wouldn’t cover future funding submissions. Sorry, but the risk for faculty brain drain and loss of research programs isn’t worth that risk.

Call it whatever you want. At some point you have to deal with the reality at hand if you are these administrators.

I was very specific in that I asked how it's different. It was a genuine question. I want to know how they're different. Why am I wrong, that Northwestern, Cornell and Columbia could not have said the same thing Harvard did: the school "will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights" by agreeing to a series of terms proposed by the Trump administration.

in a very very brief Google search, I see the 500 million dollars is to establish trade schools, and seperate from the federal funding withheld from them.

So, again, how are they different?

We need to move past the fantasy that every child is cut out for school. We're about to need a bunch of bodies to fill jobs that no American would do if they had a choice in the matter, so why not give them to Americans who have no choice in the matter? Poor people become marginally less poor, standardized test scores go up...it's a win-win.

it's just that there is no 10-12 week long summer break. In Georgia, we have a roughly 8 week long summer break, a 3 week long semester break at Christmas/NY, and two 1 week breaks in each semester.

And I've got friends that say it actually works better because they can take trips when there is more occupancy and the prices are a little bit cheaper. eg going in September to the beach/warm location when your kid "tracks out".

The narrative's prose is basic, often along the lines of I did this, and that happened, which followed the structure of the daily countdown.

Unfortunately for her and the reader, there is the general lack of self-awareness and insight that comes through. Things that go wrong are the fault of others. Biden's staff treated her poorly, and wouldn't give her things to do where she could "win." She whines about how her husband late in the stressful campaign did not plan anything for her birthday. Twice advisor David Plouffe bluntly tells her, "People hate Joe Biden," leaving her baffled. And so on.

I don't think even her fans who read this book would be especially impressed. The text won't help her status should she run again. Joe and Jill Biden don't look so good, either. Small and insecure, and disrespectful toward her loyalty to them. However, it's easy to understand this from election night, when apparent defeat looms:

All I could do was repeat over and over, "My God, my God, what will happen to our country?"

I'd rather go get a couple root canals than read that book. *

Why does it make any more/less sense than Latavia/Estonia/Lithuania....or in terms of government, Turkey or Hungary?

As for NATO, it all depends. Do you actually want to deter aggression from a Russian regime that thinks it has a right to annex as much of Ukraine as it wants? Then I think membership is overdue.

OTOH, if you want Ukraine an its people to serve as a buffer zone/no man's land between Europe and Russia so we get exactly the bloodbath we are witnessing right now, then no, NATO membership probably doesn't make sense.

He lays the entire fault of the current war at the feet of the west for giving military aid to Ukraine and playing footsie with them re: NATO.

At no point does Mearsheimer accept that the west's intervention was caused by Russia invading Crimea in 2014. He mentions the Crimean invasion in passing like twice, but more of a "well this thing happened", not as the crux of the entire conflict, which it is.

Prior to 2014 in the Yanukovych administration, Ukraine repeatedly and publicly asserted it wouldn't join NATO. That it had no interest. That it would be a helpful, but neutral European state, but he was ultimately pro-Russia (because he was in Russia's pocket). Ultimately to Yanukovych's demise.

And this is where things get complicated. I'm sure you (Chuck) know this, but a lot of other readers may not. Feb 2014, the people of Ukraine launch a revolution against Yanukovych. There were several reasons for the revolution (a lot of police state and pseudo police state shit from that regime and a lot of Russian oil billionaires having the ear of Yanukovych), but the primary one was that Ukrainians viewed Yanukovych as essentially a puppet for Putin. Ukraine and the EU had been working on a trade deal for a couple of years. Yanukovych killed the deal at the last minute and said, "nah, we're good. actually, we're going to do a deal with Russia, instead."

So now Russia sees Yanukovych deposed and think, "ah, shit, there goes our guy in Kyiv" and Russia moves a bunch of troops to the Ukraine border and 5 days after Yanukovych is voted out, the Russians invade Ukraine. Charitable readings of this from a Russian standpoint would say that the Russians were taking preemptive defensive measures. That the Yanukovych ouster was a signal that Ukraine was going to westernize. However, there's a major fly in this ointment.

One day before Russia invaded Crimea, Ukraine installed an interim government. That interim government also stated it had no intention of joining NATO.

The Russians invaded Crimea because the idea of not having a puppet in Kyiv made them uneasy and they wanted Sevastopol. The Russians took Crimea in March of 2014 and *STILL* the Ukrainian government said, "we have no interest in joining NATO." The Russians saw the power vacuum as an opportunity. When they received essentially an international finger-wagging at the Crimean invasion, they said, "fuck it, let's take the Donbas, too." And still there were only strongly worded letters (and strongly painted pictures) from the larger community.

It was only after Crimea and after months fighting in the Donbas that the Ukrainians said, "uhhh, little help here?" and asked about formally joining NATO in the fall of 2014 after the new Ukrainian government was elected in October. Eight months after Crimea. Six months after Donbas.

Russia was the instigator. NATO was not.

I mean, before now this just doesn’t happen. The way I interpret the “without prejudice” is that the DOJ can refile the cases if they can do it properly with a lawfully appointed prosecutor within six months. If they try the Comey team at least will argue that the statute ran and for him there never was an indictment versus one being dismissed. It will have to play out.

So it doesn’t help James but Comey as I said can argue that his so called indictment never existed as it had other defects. I imagine DOJ will try to refile, arguments will be presented and we’ll see what happens.

The Pentagon on Monday said that it was reviewing what it called “serious allegations of misconduct against” Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, who was among six Democratic lawmakers harshly criticized by President Donald Trump for urging members of the military to refuse to follow unlawful orders.

The Defense Department did not detail the claims against Kelly, who is a retired captain in the U.S. Navy. The department also did not say who made the allegations.

But in a statement revealing the probe on X, the Pentagon suggested that the investigation relates to Kelly’s comments about the power of service members to refuse to follow illegal orders.

The Pentagon said that a “thorough review of these allegations has been initiated to determine further actions, which may include recall to active duty for court-martial proceedings or administrative measures.”

Which is perfectly fine. A lot of the DOGE people had backgrounds in Silicon Valley. If they’d stuck with applying technology to try and make things nicer or better working, it would have been useful.

But the last thing Musk or the Trump admin wanted was for DOGE to actually help the government.
