I just finished Mick Herron’s first novel, Cemetery Road
It was pretty middling. He wrote 3 more books in the series before switching to Slow Horses. Knowing that he got so much better, I will probably give the second original series book a try, but without that would probably give it a pass. You can see the potential in Cemetery Road, and the seeds of some of the things that developed in Slow Hirses. But it’s a bit overwritten and the pacing is a bit off. The switch ups to build suspense are less effective and more kind of annoying. Previous Message Books I've enjoyed the last few months - Finished the most recent Murderbot book (Martha Wells) - really enjoyed the whole series so far. Looking forward to new one next year. - The Blacktongue Thief (Christopher Buehlman) - Fun fantasy adventure, more about the journey than the destination and the actual mission. But great characters. - The Thursday Murder Club (Richard Osman) - Fun characters, the actual mystery was a little more so-so. Will definetly continue with the series. Really like Richard Osman, from the early season of Taskmaster and his current show, Richard Osman's House of Games. - Read both of the Vera Wong mystery books (Jesse Q Sutanto). Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murders and Vera Wong's Guide to Snooping on a Dead Man. Really enjoy all the characters and both books are really funny. More of a cozy mystery than a hardcore mystery/thriller. - Of Monsters and Mainframes (Barbara Truleove). The setup was intersting, though some of it felt too much like a few of the Murderbot books with the ship AI storyline. But the old school monsters make for an intersting sci-fi twist. - A Drop of Corruption (Robert Jackson Bennett). Sequal to The Tainted Cup. Loved this one as much as the first book in the series. Both favorites for the year. Finished book 4 in The Stormlight Archives, Rhythm of War (Brandon Sanderson). This was probably the slowest of the books so far, but still really enjoyed it. Will need to tackle book 5 in the new year. The Spellshop (Sarah Beth Durst) - Very cute cozy fantasy. Quick read. For anyone that enjoyed "Legends & Lattes" or "The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches" or "A Psalm for the Wild-Built" Currently reading "A Strength of the Few" (James Islington), the sequel to "A Will of the Many", which was another of my top 5 books of the year.
