I realize a novelist can run with a base story and do whatever he wants. But to me, the story deviated too much from Twain's original in the narrative and characterizations.

I was reminded of reboots and prequels, as in reworkings of the Star Trek baseline. How far can you go and still count, as opposed to making up your own independent story.
