…as opposed to any specific successful anti-crime policies pursued by individual cities. Looking at the stats over time I wonder if the pandemic might have triggered a big burst in violent crime with a bunch of people losing jobs and everything being shut down so there were no outlets for energy or activity. And now that’s fading and things are relaxing back to the prior normal levels. But maybe that’s not the reason.
The same is true of the big drop in the 90’s across many cities. New York got a ton of credit for their broken windows policing, but other cities who weren’t doing that showed big drops in crime at the same time.
