The main board will sit above the horseshoe-shaped stadium’s south end zone. Anthony James Partners (AJP) worked with the university to design the scoreboard, which required significant structural and infrastructure coordination to accommodate the increased height and width of the 103-year-old stadium’s primary display.
The videoboard would be the fifth-largest in pro football and moves Illinois ahead of other college football venues with massive boards, including Auburn (10,690 sq. ft.), Purdue (8,461 sq. ft.), Oregon (8,208 sq. ft.), Michigan (8,165 sq. ft.), Wisconsin (7,941 sq. ft.), Utah (7,808 sq. ft.), Oklahoma (7,803 sq. ft.), Mississippi State (7,777 sq. ft.), and Texas A&M (7,635 sq. ft.). Illinois’ videoboard will be more than double the size of those schools’ main display (except Auburn’s) and includes video displays on the outward-facing backside to greet fans as they arrive at Gies Memorial Stadium. And its 16.1 million pixels represent a 195% increase over the previous main stadium display.
