There's no doubt in my mind that Josh, Bret and staff would counter where they thought it was reasonable money. This regime has, short of IU football, been exemplary in how to manage this new normal. So when the dust clears, I think we'll have a good D line that we have not overpaid for and continue to boss SEC teams in next year's Reliaquest Bowl.

He said he thinks there’s going to be a lot of unfilled promises with the above-revenue-share deals because they’re going to be rejected once they’re submitted to the CSC portal. He also acknowledged they might never be submitted, which I think is the right answer.

Anyway, my sense from his comments was that we’re only marginally supplementing above the revenue share numbers. But I’m not sure if he was just putting on to maintain appearances.

This situation is a good example of how the Big Ten's template rev-share contract - which Washington used - limits movement.

Buyout provisions & rev-share reductions built in these contracts are mechanisms to stabilize rosters. They will likely find a courtroom at some point.

waste of time and resources. you recruit such a player, you have to play him immediately. he plays immediately, he will stink because that's what Freshmen do. He stinks, then he transfers because we didn't "develop" him properly. Now we're out $2-3mm (or more) we could have otherwise spent on retention.

i don't think anyone should think this kid getting away hurts. if we get him great, but we've seen what happens when you recruit an Elite 11 type QB - he stays a year or two and txfers before doing anything meaningful.

I think there's been this phase of excitement and disruption and there's going to be a lot of burnout on the back end (especially if we nationally are headed towards any sort of recession) as stuff resets.

I think the following can all be true:

1. Just about everyone is doing variations of the same thing, we can pretty much discount any "X school has secured all sorts of funding and will be competitive" as PR bulllshit.
2. At the end of the day there is some rise and fall of programs due to the churn, but you wind up with programs with certain natural or historical advantages more or less in teh same position as they were.
3. A lot of rise and fall with programs can be explained by demographics or leadership changes
4. Illinois has done a pretty darn good job as a whole navigating this environment

as some drop out, others will opt in *

...and knows that this fledgling program could be right back in its old spot with a bad season... there's just so much competition now that you can never rest.

So he's churning out the guys who he doesn't see as legitimate 75%+ snap guys, regardless of what we've seen so far... and at least from what he's previously said, he already has talked to these guys and there really aren't any surprises.

Which also leads me to believe he and his scouting dept. have done a shit ton of work finding the guys they believe are legitimately better than the ones they have while expecting some of the younger guys (Trimble, in particular) to step up huge next year.

I hate seeing a guy like Morez at Michigan and if Luke had gone to Tennessee and killed it there, that too would have been a nut punch.

But I actually like the fact that there’s always hope, and I think that fact gets minimized by those who say they hate this new era. You used to be fully locked in with what you have for years by your high school recruiting, and there was very little you could do about it if you had some misses. I don’t miss the days where Quentin Snider decommitting on signing day made me (correctly) think that the next 2 seasons of Illinois basketball were pretty much fucked. That ruined my enjoyment more than having to learn some new names and faces every year.

Its also taken me way less time than expected to feel like the transfer players are “one of us,” I don’t really think it takes 3 years for there to be that connection.

But I'm talking about results on the field/court. Braun's done well to get them in 2 bowls but the last 7 seasons have not been that great from where they were. And it looks like Collins may have peaked in hoops because they're not dancing again this year.

And it's missing my point that most people will care more about winning. If that stops then the other stuff may start to make them wonder.

I don't think life is too bad for us, we have the resources to be competitive, and I think have elevated ourselves during this period of churn... I also think we need to understand our "increased resources" are matched by just about everyone else.

is a problem. We need to somehow get to multi-year contracts with a buyout clause. If you want to sign for one year, the school can pass or pay less. If you sign for multiple years and want to move, then you (or really your new program) needs to pay back some of the money you received.

I feel like it be something like everything is a 2 year contract. Commit out of HS? 2 year contract. Once those 2 years are up, you sign another 2 year contract. I know you can go to 5 years, so there might be an option structure around that 5th year.

In general, I feel like for the sport and fandom to survive, both the school and the player should always commit to 2 years minimum. Then you end up with real free agency, etc.

but my understanding of those NIL agreements are that the schools and conferences get to use the athletes NIL in perpetuity. For example, if UI wants to put Luke Altmyer on a billboard or if the B1G wants to use Keaton Wagler in an advertisement they have the rights to do that.

but i don't want a cornerback that was a high 4* recruited to UF that didn't play for them. that kid can't play football.
