As you say, because prices were high. It doesn't make sense to load it up with $80-90/bbl oil like we saw for a lot of '22 and '23.

He publicly authorized some purchases that were mostly on the small side and levels rebounded a bit.

But we're still at levels we haven't seen since the early 80s.

Biden admin DID begin refilling the SPR, but there's a limit to how fast it can be refilled because it needs repair every time it's drawn down, and also because it doesn't make much sense to fill it when prices are high.

Trump is going to use about 40% of the SPR over the next 4 months because gas prices are suddenly politically inconvenient because Iran is humping the Strait of Hormuz in the war that was supposedly over.

And, as a reminder, Trump took Venezuela because of their oil. Which we don't have the infrastructure to get out of the ground and that's too sulfuric to put in the SPR because it will literally destroy it.
