The number of hilarious movies that stand the test of time is a very small number.
The number of authors who wrote hilarious books are even rarer. I think I can name two or three that wrote fiction and make me actually laugh every few pages and maybe a couple others that wrote other stuff.
The number of hilarious tv shows is also very low.
The number of actually hilarious actors in those hilarious tv shows and movies is probably even less.
A comedy show, with tons of writers and tons of years -- SNL -- has maybe an average of one or two funny skits an episode and far fewer that rank as hilarious. Late night tv has lots of writers and rarely is laugh out loud funny.
A handful of stand up comedians can maybe make a few hilarious bits they use in their acts, but it's kind of like bands and songs -- the majority of the best known ones only have a few really good ones. Only a handful can string a few hours of funny stuff together.
Comedy is super hard, and way under celebrated.

…in his interviews, when in fact he’s just really annoying and obviously over-acting the part. Right now it’s Jack Black, before him it was Jim Carey, and before him it was Robin Williams.
Was there somebody in this mold before Robin Williams? Dangerfield had a bit of this going on, but I think he was funnier, and it was more just an extension of his stand-up act.
