So they didn't have to sign to a new contract at all. They had him under control for the next 4 seasons already.
So the new contract is really about guaranteeing his first two free agent years at age 29 and 30 in 2031 and 2032. The next 4 years of the contract he will make likely around what he would have made anyways.
They feel it is a good bet to place now on a player that has displayed his talent and with his defense has a high floor. Not to mention the off the field elements.
Whereas a player like Busch is already 28 years old. His first free agent year will be at age 32 and he's a player that already has some limits (hope he improves against lefties) and will be entering his decline phase.
So unfortunately for him there isn't really any value for the Cubs to give him a payday.
