Especially after the prognostications of getting swept by our "daddies".

Do I wish all of our pitching staff wasn't on the DL. Yes.

Can I still find a way to enjoy the high points of the season when they happen? Yes.

This is a playoff team. If the pitching gets healthy in time for the end of the year, this is a dangerous playoff team.

Horton is out. The org has said Steele won't start this year.

Maybe Cabrera stops being mediocre. Maybe Boyd can be what he was last year (coming off an injury), Maybe Ben Brown stays hot, maybe Shota stops giving up HRs. That's a lot of maybes.

And as for the bitching...context matters. They had loaded the bases with no outs, after already giving up a run, after scoring 3 at the top of the inning with a bullpen that is no stranger to blowing leads.

I think it’s reached the point with Milwaukee’s complete ownership of the Cubs that I don’t even want to watch a second of any series’ that we play against them.

Those numbers from last year were surprising to me so I had to look it up, it was partially influenced by the Cubs taking 3 of 4 in August after the Brewers were miles ahead in the standings. But those games still count so I’ll admit it wasn’t as bad as I thought.

When it comes to win the games that really matter though, the Brewers have had our number for some time now.

But they are 7-3 in their last 10 games. Had a terrible stretch before but they are back to playing pretty solid baseball.

And to ISDH’s comment, I definitely don’t think you can say that a wild card team would “surely lose” a 3 game series. Wild card teams make a run all the time.

Obviously it’s all a moot point if they completely run out of pitchers.

I grew up in the era of three division winners and a wild card so ymmv, actually most of you probably have a baseline of even fewer playoff teams.

Nowadays things have to entirely fall apart to not be able to have a sniff at the postseason. The Cubs should very rarely ever be sellers at the deadline. If they can make it through the next month-plus merely at a .500 clip they'll simply be a few games back of the last wildcard spot and in a possession where injury recovery and aggressive deadline moves ought to guarantee a playoff bid. You have to actively suck nowadays to not have a shot even going into the last week of the season and a team like this can at least do that.

And yeah, the playoffs are weird now because it's no longer a coronation of the regular season. Dodgers are on pace for 100+ wins which recent history shows that means they won't get the WS.

I feel like a lot of times the answer is just that is really weird and hard and hitters can totally lose it out of nowhere. He had a pretty typical season last year based on his career numbers up to that point, this year it just fell off a cliff.

Pedro Ramirez is giving them a nice option if they want to have more games with Nico at SS, not that Nico has been much better the last 2 months. But I’m also cautious about getting too excited about Ramirez’s bat because we saw what happened with Ballesteros once the league adjusted and we still haven’t hit that stage for Ramirez.

They are a fanbase that travels well, which shouldn't be surprising as they basically the national team of Canada.

Went to a Mariners-Blue Jay game in Seattle two years ago with the same nephew, and almost half the fans in attendance were Blue Jay fans (being so close to Vancouver it also shouldn't be too surprising).

I don’t have the exact numbers as I heard it at the gym, but at home on fly balls he is slugging around .200 with distance like 70 feet less than fly balls hit on the road.

Both he and the Cubs should have realized Wrigley is a poor fit for his hitting style. He’s been pretty good in the road, similar to his career numbers

Two massive black holes right in the middle of the lineup whenever you need a big hit.

Then you have Swanson who’s been terrible all year and Hoerner who’s been terrible since the first month, plus Moises falling off a cliff after the first few weeks.

It’s the same thing that has plagued this roster for years, it’s full of good MLB players who play good defense but the lineup just doesn’t have enough consistent juice. And Bregman is just adding another guy with the same profile to the pile. But now Ricketts can say “See, you made me overspend in free agency and this is what happens!”

Boyd the hope is maybe 6 weeks.

Harvey just had another setback is being shutdown for a month.

Steele is currently shutdown and won't be evaluated for 3 weeks.

Thielbar is hopefully back in a couple weeks. He's throwing off a mound tomorrow

Martin is probably out another month at least.

Jaxon Wiggins seems could be back to making appearances soon. Jordan Wicks is back in Iowa but he's been terrible. Haven't really heard any updates on Brandon Birdsell.

The pitching injuries are just a killer

Craig can’t rely on giving innings to a bullpen that is being stocked with replacement level guys like Vince Velazquez, Yacksel Rios, Charlie Barnes etc. so he’s forced to try to push a Boyd that’s not all the way back clearly.

Very bad pitching situation. Can’t afford to keep rostering these types of players. Need health.

And this hasn’t even touched on my distaste for Javier Assad.

Last week vs the Phillies was one of the best games he’s pitched with 26 whiffs and 11 K. Today only 6 whiffs and 1 K but 10 groundballs.

Curious if it was more him or the Phillies trying to change things up after last week.

It worked well on a night with the wind blowing out lightly. If he he’s able to consistently get groundballs with the wind blowing out or pitch like he did last week with the whiffs I’ll gladly eat my words on him.

Maybe the hamstring really was the issue last season.

He has such tunnel vision that he thinks an inning ending double play is the only way out of that inning. So, in his mind, Nico steals second and the double play isn’t in order anymore.

Nevermind the fact that Torrens is all world at throwing guys out. Or that you could go after the guy hitting .164 to get an out and take away the sac fly possibility and get out of the inning after that. Or that you could walk the next guy to load the bases and set up the double play again.

It’s not his fault he was saddled with this roster, but he’s been asleep at the wheel like this many times. He’s not a good manager.

granted in the bullpen they only have 2 guys you can really count on (O'Brien & Romero). I fully expect this to go where we all think it will come late May. Ridiculously early obviously but in 8 games in Myrtle Beach he's hitting .367/.524/.567. He has 10 walks vs. 1 K.

That's extremely impressive to go straight from high school and the Cubs obviously thought pretty highly of him in spring training when they were putting him in major league games.

One to watch out for. Potentially a kid who jumps up prospect boards pretty quickly.

Technically the only players mentioned signed for the next 4 years:

PCA
Nico
Bregman
Dansby

These 4 have signed contracts through the next 4 seasons.

These players the Cubs have control over with their service time noted:

Amaya 2.130
Busch 2.045

They only have signed contracts for this season. The Cubs can choose after each offseason if they want to offer them a contract or not until they reach 6 years of service time. For the first 3 years the team can offer whatever contract the team wants and the player only recourse to play baseball is to sign that contract. Universally except for very rare occasions it's a 1 year deal for around league minimum.

Once they compile 3 years of service time which they will this offseason they have the ability to arbitrate their contracts. But it's still up to the club to decide whether they want to offer a contract and almost always offering a 1 year deal.

Also to note PCA only entered the year with 1.170 service time

So they didn't have to sign to a new contract at all. They had him under control for the next 4 seasons already.

So the new contract is really about guaranteeing his first two free agent years at age 29 and 30 in 2031 and 2032. The next 4 years of the contract he will make likely around what he would have made anyways.

They feel it is a good bet to place now on a player that has displayed his talent and with his defense has a high floor. Not to mention the off the field elements.

Whereas a player like Busch is already 28 years old. His first free agent year will be at age 32 and he's a player that already has some limits (hope he improves against lefties) and will be entering his decline phase.

So unfortunately for him there isn't really any value for the Cubs to give him a payday.

Players can hit certain thresholds and receive bonuses if pre-arb.

So that helps a little bit.

That was put in under the most recent CBA and I'm sure MLBPA rank and file will probably fight to expand it in the upcoming CBA fight.

Last year PCA got $1.2 million in bonus, Horton ~$850k and Busch ~$500k

Which is all I'd been asking the last few offseasons. Make decisions that add to the team, not just replace what's outgoing.

Technically Bregman is a Tucker replacement, I suppose, but in the context of a Suzuki/Ballesteros rotation RF/DH and Shaw now being a supersub, we've come into this season with a deeper team. Assuming they make a move at some point before the deadline too to add another piece.

Nico got 6 years $141 million *
