Last week vs the Phillies was one of the best games he’s pitched with 26 whiffs and 11 K. Today only 6 whiffs and 1 K but 10 groundballs.

Curious if it was more him or the Phillies trying to change things up after last week.

It worked well on a night with the wind blowing out lightly. If he he’s able to consistently get groundballs with the wind blowing out or pitch like he did last week with the whiffs I’ll gladly eat my words on him.

Maybe the hamstring really was the issue last season.

He has such tunnel vision that he thinks an inning ending double play is the only way out of that inning. So, in his mind, Nico steals second and the double play isn’t in order anymore.

Nevermind the fact that Torrens is all world at throwing guys out. Or that you could go after the guy hitting .164 to get an out and take away the sac fly possibility and get out of the inning after that. Or that you could walk the next guy to load the bases and set up the double play again.

It’s not his fault he was saddled with this roster, but he’s been asleep at the wheel like this many times. He’s not a good manager.

granted in the bullpen they only have 2 guys you can really count on (O'Brien & Romero). I fully expect this to go where we all think it will come late May. I just don't think they're build to be a winner yet...by design. But here's hoping Walker continues to show that he's finally figured it out and Wetherholt gets ABs and shows he's a everyday 2B.

6th round pick last year out of California high school

Ridiculously early obviously but in 8 games in Myrtle Beach he's hitting .367/.524/.567. He has 10 walks vs. 1 K.

That's extremely impressive to go straight from high school and the Cubs obviously thought pretty highly of him in spring training when they were putting him in major league games.

One to watch out for. Potentially a kid who jumps up prospect boards pretty quickly.

I think the Pirates are likely pretty good but losing 2 of 3 at home when you don’t face Skenes is tough.

Technically the only players mentioned signed for the next 4 years:

PCA
Nico
Bregman
Dansby

These 4 have signed contracts through the next 4 seasons.

These players the Cubs have control over with their service time noted:

Amaya 2.130
Busch 2.045

They only have signed contracts for this season. The Cubs can choose after each offseason if they want to offer them a contract or not until they reach 6 years of service time. For the first 3 years the team can offer whatever contract the team wants and the player only recourse to play baseball is to sign that contract. Universally except for very rare occasions it's a 1 year deal for around league minimum.

Once they compile 3 years of service time which they will this offseason they have the ability to arbitrate their contracts. But it's still up to the club to decide whether they want to offer a contract and almost always offering a 1 year deal.

Also to note PCA only entered the year with 1.170 service time

So they didn't have to sign to a new contract at all. They had him under control for the next 4 seasons already.

So the new contract is really about guaranteeing his first two free agent years at age 29 and 30 in 2031 and 2032. The next 4 years of the contract he will make likely around what he would have made anyways.

They feel it is a good bet to place now on a player that has displayed his talent and with his defense has a high floor. Not to mention the off the field elements.

Whereas a player like Busch is already 28 years old. His first free agent year will be at age 32 and he's a player that already has some limits (hope he improves against lefties) and will be entering his decline phase.

So unfortunately for him there isn't really any value for the Cubs to give him a payday.

So that helps a little bit.

That was put in under the most recent CBA and I'm sure MLBPA rank and file will probably fight to expand it in the upcoming CBA fight.

Last year PCA got $1.2 million in bonus, Horton ~$850k and Busch ~$500k

Which is all I'd been asking the last few offseasons. Make decisions that add to the team, not just replace what's outgoing.

Technically Bregman is a Tucker replacement, I suppose, but in the context of a Suzuki/Ballesteros rotation RF/DH and Shaw now being a supersub, we've come into this season with a deeper team. Assuming they make a move at some point before the deadline too to add another piece.
