Out of Darkness: The Germans 1942-2022 by Frank Trentmann.
I had not realized quite how unrepentant most Germans were and generally resistant even after all of the atrocities were widely known, to any sense of war guilt or general accountability.
It was only a generation later that the country really made any serious attempt at coming to grips with the Nazi period. The actual people alive and involved at the time largely did not, and opposed political or social efforts in that direction.
