I have a friend who is a copywriter and freelance journalist, and she used do a side gig where she was consulting for drug companies to come up with names for new drugs. As doc said earlier, there are some FDA guidelines, but it's mostly just coming up with a name that is catchy or memorable.

The generic name is by using the prefixes, stems and suffixes of the chemicals of the drug, to create a name that conveys what the drug does and has.

The brand name (often several options) is submitted by the company and has to be approved by a government council. This council has to verify there is no confusion with other names and drugs and that it is acceptable to use.

I miss the old days when the companies were more unchecked and could make names like Rapaflo. Which is for relaxing the prostate and bladder neck allowing for improved urination.
