Could all be a smokescreen but there’s a lot of buzz from insiders that the Sharks might not be taking Michael Misa at #2 and may prefer Frondell. Misa is widely assumed to be the Blackhawks ideal option that they were trying to trade up to #1 for. And is rated as the top forward in the draft by virtually every scouting service.

I am still guessing that SJ takes Misa in the end, but this would be awesome.

Most teams have cap space now due to the increasing cap, and those few top guys are going to come to Chicago at this stage of the rebuild.

And if the young players hit like they hope for, the roster is going to get expensive real quickly. Nobody is doing cheap bridge deals anymore.

Like West still has another year of HS/USHL before going to MSU.

Usually youth is a good indicator though. Big, young, can skate, but maybe not any real production. The Nestrasil pick is more iffy to me than West or Frondell.

That part does make sense. He seems convinced all these current prospects are going to hit.

Which will surely not be the case, but in the off chance it is, they won’t be able to keep a lot of them and will need to have replacements ready in 4-5 years.

It’s the Swedish #2 league. Not the Swedish top league. My assumption is that his numbers aren’t super impressive in the #2 league but if that league is more on par with say the AHL or the NCAA that is more impressive.

To whatever degree the betting odds are informative, that could mean that intel is shifting back to Misa though I haven’t seen anything concrete. One of the legitimate prospect guys said last night that almost everyone he talked to from other teams was saying they expected the Sharks to take Frondell, but acknowledged that no one really knows what the GM has in mind since he’s been very tight-lipped.

Kane gets badly injured with a few months left and goes on injured reserve which meant he couldn’t return for the rest of the regular season. When on season-ending IR, in the prior CBA that player’s salary no longer counted towards the cap for that season. So this allowed the Blackhawks to trade for a 2nd line center (Vermette) and defenseman (Timmonen) that they otherwise would have had no money for.

And then there was no rule that Kane couldn’t come back for the playoffs, so when he did they effectively went through the postseason with a team that was a few million over the salary cap.

Seems like they're annoyingly a pick or two low enough where the tier of players drops off, with the last two C with top 6 projection (Cootes/Reschny) and last of the 2nd tier defense prospects (Reid) going in the picks before them. They'll have their pick of the next tier, likely C Nesbitt or RHD Hensler.

I think people have convinced themselves for some reason Hagens is not the guy. Sometimes get too caught up in picking the old guard apart and looking at the flashy new thing

The Panthers are breaking people’s brains, the idea that he’d suddenly be a great option if he was 1.5 inches taller but doesn’t fit the roster since he’s not is ridiculous.

I’ve expected the pick to be Frondell ever since lottery night though, so I’ll stick with that.
