Meanwhile my kids roam around campus freely and we're downtown every Friday night with thousands of other famies enjoying live music and walking around with drinks.

I spite of the fact that we live here and give them a million pieces of evidence that they're wrong, it doesn't fit their narrative of the world so there's no telling them differently.

I suppose if you're in certain neighborhoods at 2:30 in the morning and have a beef with the local dealer you might get shot.

The drug problem is off the charts bad. My wife went for an education conference, and she simply didn't feel safe. She was stepping over all kinds of people that were zombie-like and reaching out and being grabby and what not. It's unsettling, and likely less safe than other places. Is Fox News overdramatizing it? Yes. Is everything great in Portland right now? I think no. We all have to be OK with admitting when there's a problem that our own party created. People fuck up. Fix it.

How long ago was her trip? There was a couple of years where things got really bad, but I think it's getting gradually better. The reality is that urban places have urban problems, and I think that the improper decision was made to stop enforcing laws in such a dilligent manner. I think the pendulum is swinging back the other direction.

in 2020-21. When I was there in June 2021, it was still recovering from the George Floyd riots (stayed at The Nines on the little square by the courthouse). When I was there in 2022, a guy fell off a bike in front of me in the Pearl (right by Powells) and a couple of needles fell out of his backpack.

The last two times I've been, however, the place has gotten much better and seems more like I remember it pre-pandemic.

and downtown after 10 or 11 was legit a problem. Cars would roll in and just park in the middle of the street and people would get out and crank music and just sit there and hang out and fuck around creating problems.

Largely a symptom of other issues exacerbated by the lock downs. That's all over now. Life goes on.

Similar story re: Urbana schools - particularly the high school. The closures just wrecked that place. A big part of it was that no sports meant kids had no place they were required to be and nothing to stay eligible for and no to be accountable to.

Attendance was basically optional even through '22 and when the kids came back it was like they had to learn how to behave all over again.

A return to normalcy and stronger leadership in place has helped right the ship.

We really should have made keeping schools open a priority in a way that did not happen, and everyone was incredibly naive to think that that wouldn't have a lasting effect on the students who were impacted.

Schools in PA reopened at the start of Fall 2020 school year. In our district kids

were given the option of 4x/week in-school or fully remote. After about the first quarter, most of the kids went in-person.

It was probably OK to have closed them down in March 2020. It was absolutely not the right call to keep them closed the next school year.

A major consequence of the pandemic is that it exposed a lot of societal problems and exacerbated them nearly to the breaking point. It took years for major cities like Seattle to recover from the damage that was done. Combine that with work from home trends and it really brought the viability of downtowns to a critical emergency level.
