Still have 1 more spot on their active roster but will probably just fill it with Ober or Bradley on the day they start next.

Bunch of retreads and one guy they acquired who had already been in the big leagues. No debuts.

That was my feeling too heading into this that the rental starter market was mediocre, but you gotta be willing to pay for the controlled starters if you’re gonna focus there.

Prices just too high I guess.

In theory, I get the notion that the cost was too high. You can't just meet whatever demands just because. But all we were told when Jed didn't do that over the winter was that they'd have the flexibility to make a move for a starter during the season. And it played out just as the skeptics assumed it would.

but i didn't have very high expectations. they didn't have a lot of value to sell.

i don't like sitting on robert, but if they pick up his option i'll be fine with it. i can see him being difficult to trade, and none of the outfielders dealt received much of a return.

All 4 of these moves are fine, but how the fuck do you look at this pitching situation and think that Mike Soroka is the only move you need to make in the rotation. Especially with a very concerning drop in velocity in his recent starts.

And if you weren’t gonna upgrade the rotation, then get a true impact reliever. There were several available.

Just really disappointing.

Castro is perfect fit.

I like Soroka a lot but some concerning things with him.

Kittredge and Rogers are fine in the pen.

Another starter would've been nice though.

I’m with slotting Moises in at DH going forward, but if they keep Tucker then they still have 4 OF’s with one of them needing to take that DH spot. I wouldn’t be opposed to moving Suzuki so it’s not like there aren’t other ways around it, but then we just become even more left-handed.

You can’t give up a potential #1 overall prospect for a reliever, you just can’t.

That being said, the 4 contenders in the NL East and NL Wesr have really put together some top notch bullpens, that area has now become a clear weakness for the Cubs relative to the other contenders. At least it’s the most volatile part of a team though so there’s always a decent chance that these moves don’t pay off come the postseason.

They want to make Miller a SP next year to either pair with King and Pivetta, or insurance for King leaving. Second, the Boegarts renaissance is real and they think he can play another 2-3 years at SS. Three, Cronenworth will continue to play to his contract another 2-3 years as well making (ugh) Devries expendable. Padres probably have a 3 year window left after this year (for now) and devries and salas probably won’t help much during that. So if Miller turns into a demon SP the next 3 years after this and Sears hold up as a back end starter, I can just barely not kill myself over it.

Now just need a C, LF and a couple bench bats and it’s a really good team for October. Absolute demon pen for sure.

If Soroka keeps pitching the way his peripherals suggest he's probably the best pitcher that's been moved so far and possibly the best pitcher that will be moved.

Of course it comes with lots of risks.

Kittredge is a solid addition.

I don't expect these to be all the moves though. I would like Edward Cabrera but we'll see if they can actually get that done.

I still think they add a bat and a starter and a another reliever.

Suarez is the only guy I really wanted that has gone off the board. I'd have liked Duran but didn't think the Cubs had a shot to land him.

I’m not upset about this from a Cubs standpoint, but for the O’s, I’d much rather trade in this tier of prospect than some AAAA starter that’s 26 and likely never going to be anything. Give me the upside.

There’s only one impact bat available that makes any sense for the Cubs (Suarez) and the D’Backs are probably asking for a ridiculous return since they know how many teams want him. I’m not opposed to overpaying within reason, but I could also a big regression coming for him.

I doubt guys like Joe Ryan or Gore are available unless someone wants to gut their farm system, and if that’s the case then what are you left with. Keller isn’t worth the prospect capital the Pirates would demand, and the Marlins have no reason to sell low on Alcantara so you’d be giving away top prospects for a guy coming off surgery that has a 7 ERA. This is why I think you’d see someone like Merrill Kelly being the best fit, but I could honestly see them digging a level below that and taking a shot with Bieber as has been rumored.

I’ve been pissed at Jed in the past for not making a bold move, but the more I look at this market, I’m kind of on board with him not doing it this time? I feel like the improvements that can make this team a WS contender are mostly going to come from the guys already here and they more just need to add a couple more reliable arms and maybe a bench bat to fill some smaller holes.

The worry is the lack of innings and velo dip. So if he's hurt again that will suck.

But as a pitcher this year he's had a .295 xwoba. That's 20th in baseball with 200 balls in play minimum. That's better than Max Fried and Matt Boyd who are at .296 and tied with Robbie Ray.

Last year as a reliever he had a 39% k rate and hitters hit .189/.303/.291 off him.

I feel like he gives them options. If they acquire more starting pitching he can go to the pen or if the only acquire another starter and focus on the bullpen he can start.

Just stay healthy and keep pitching well.

I think Nats misused him as a starter, seems like he would have been better out of the pen*

you’re giving up a top 5 organizational prospect or top 100 overall prospect. Like the Rogers trade seems like an extreme overpay but they gave up a couple 24 year old players that now slot in as SF’s #12 and #13 prospects. That wouldn’t sting for me at all if I’m a Mets fan.

Any deal the Cubs can make like that I would be totally fine with, it’s only the ones where you’re giving up a true asset like Cassie/Rojas/Wiggins/Alcantara that I’d scrutinize more. You have to be getting a true difference maker if tapping into that group, I remain terrified that they’re going to overpay for Mitch Keller by trading some of those guys. Alcantara I’m most comfortable moving on from though.

I kind of think yes? Tigers are pretty much just Tarik Skubal and reality has hit for their shitty lineup, the Astros aren’t nearly what they used to be and are injured, the Yankees have tons of roster holes, and the Blue Jays kind of just feel like a team that got really hot for a month.

If not for their pixie magic I’d say a couple those are still maybe better than the Brewers on paper, but beyond that I think the Dodgers/Padres/Phillies/Mets/Cubs are all clearly better and knowing Milwaukee they’ll be the one with the best record out of all of them.

Xfinity is telling all RSNs either accept the higher tier or get left off.

Kind of lucky the Cubs haven’t moved there yet. They’ve been doing monthly extensions this year. The old deal ended after last season.

He’s also arb eligible and going to make more money and the Twins need to determine how they want to handle his final years because most likely he’s not resigning there.

He has two years left of control after this season. He will most likely be traded at some point and if the Twins aren’t gonna compete they may be (probably) better off getting a return for him.

That may not be now but teams will certainly be willing to offer a lot

He has allowed 1.8 walks per 9 innings for his career, though that number has crept up to 2.3 per 9 this season.

At the same time, name any pitcher (or pitching coach) who wouldn't prefer to be ahead 0-1 if everything's on the level? Clase might have more wiggle room than most on the first pitch of an at-bat because his command is so good, but that only makes it weirder that he'd miss by so much so often.

All that having been typed, the tweet does not offer any mathematical controls for his first-pitch strikes, his wildness in other counts, etc.

It’s also impossible to get ahead of it enough in the middle of the inning due to the TV feeds being delayed, so doing it in the first pitch of an inning is where the betting action would be most possible.

Don’t guys have like an .800 OPS with a 1-0 count versus something like .600 with an 0-1? Sure Clase might believe he could overcome it given how unhittable he was last year but that hasn’t been the case.

I think my preference would be for them to just go the rental route at SP, I really don’t think they need to pay the prospect premium for controllable years when I feel pretty good about the top 4 they should already have for next year (Steele, Imanaga, Boyd, Horton) and there’s 1 year of Taillon left too.

I hope Nightengale is just being played as usual when saying the Cubs are willing to give Cassie for Mitch Keller, that would be really dumb IMO. Giving away a premium asset for a middle of the rotation starter just because you’d get him for 2 more years is foolish, and it’s not even a super cheap contract either. The value of those 2 controllable shouldn’t be as much for the Cubs as it might be for some other teams so I don’t want to pay for it.

I’d much rather pay the rental price for Merrill Kelly, you don’t actually need to add a starter for next year and I’d rather have Kelly than Keller for the rest of this season. Could try to kill two birds with one stone and get Shelby Miller from AZ as an added bullpen arm too.

At least in terms of starting the year. The Cubs need pitching both in depth and quality.

I think Keller has been a better pitcher this year than Kelly and has more upside not to mention the controllable years.

I don't know if I'd do Caissie for Keller but I'd do it for Keller and Bednar.

I like Caissie but he also strikes out a ton and I'm not certain he'll stick in the field.

The controllable starters are mostly better than the rental starters. The rental starter market is mediocre at best.

The metrics I look at have Keller being slightly ahead of Kelly

xWOBA: Keller .315 Kelly .317
xERA: Keller 3.81 Kelly 3.87
fWAR: Keller 2.6 Kelly 2.2
FIP: Keller 3.42 Kelly 3.53
BABIP: Keller .279 Kelly .247

Despite the lower strikeout rate Keller has mostly been better at things you can control. Kelly has been more luck based in terms of results.

Keller has had more HR luck than Kelly though.

I take bWAR at a discount towards fWAR and I don't really look at ERA at all.

Keller doesn't walk people and he doesn't give up barrels. His results are more sustainable than Kelly's. Kelly will regress more in the 2nd half most likely.

Both pitchers are middle of the rotation. Neither elite.

I wouldn't prioritize either of them.

Because if he's good he'll get traded and if he's bad they aren't picking up the option.

Seems he's played well enough recently to maybe tempt some teams to maybe take a chance.

I don't think he'd be a surprise and neither really would Helsley. Though that's probably a tougher decision only being 3.5 back of the WC and the Cards generally are a team that doesn't sell, but if they were being honest they should move Helsley

They haven't traded him because he's been terrible and nobody would want to take on that contract.

Now that he's in his last guaranteed year it's more likely he moves. Either way I don't think he's on the 2026 White Sox. Unless some crazy scenario happens where he doesn't get traded but goes off in the last two months.

Also why would Ishbia get a say? Robert will 100% not be on the roster by the time he takes over.
