looking into his career, he barely made it into the HOF on the third ballot by 6 votes.

Perhaps he was evaluated higher than he should be because when he played, the only teams on TV every day were the braves and Cubs

I'm sure it helps to avoid smoking (and probably vaping), wear sunscreen, get the HPV vaccine, etc., but everyone in the modern world interacts with potential carcinogens every day. For most of us, something else will come along and take us out. For the rest of us, it's only a matter of time.

He was my childhood idol.

At the risk of pulling a Wisch, before the days of jerseys being readily available my parents had the local sporting goods store print me a handmade Sandberg t-shirt jersey. Which I thought was the coolest thing I had ever seen.

And unlike many of my childhood idols, it sounds like he was legitimately a good guy too.
