...but one thing that is surprising is the amount of low alcohol (Miller 64, Mich Ultra) and NA beers you'll see drunk around these parts.

Though Spotted Cow is omni-present, I don't see it drunken by locals nearly as much. I would put High Life above it.

…are weighted against national averages and plot the most distinctive pick for each state—the brand or whatever where a state has the largest deviation from the average.

So if Bud was 60% of sales nationally, if Bud was 60% of sales in a state it wouldn’t get flagged since it’s no more popular there than anywhere else. So instead it would tag a brand that was 10% of the national market but 15% of the local market, since that had the biggest local jump.

Not sure if that’s how this map was generated, but something like that could explain odd results,

but I was definitely surprised by some of them, Sam Adams and Ultra in particular. Bud, Coors, Modelo, don't surprise me at all. Guiness is nonsense. It's a very popular beer, but there's no way it the most popular.

Domestic beers still overwhelmingly dwarf everything else in sheer quantity. The Sam Adams one in Wisconsin in particular is one that doesn’t make sense, but Coors/Bud/Ultra being tops in most places is certainly still valid.
