I'm woefully ignorant beyond the absolute basics.

2nd topic would be the smoking of tasty meats. But I feel like I'll get into that when I have more time.

We just got a smoker. Did pulled pork for the first time last week.

Hell I think I was one of the last in my Kindergarten class who learned to tie his shoes. Who the hell has time for that when grownups will do it for you?!?!

That said, I every time I try to learn to tie a palomar (including this week) I quickly give up and go right back to the basic fisherman's.

I thought I knew a decent amount about fishing, but apparently ocean/surf fishing and freshwater lake fishing are like two entirely different worlds.

If you're not looking to change careers, and just want it for farting around locally, you can look into the sport pilot stuff. The original rules were pretty restrictive, but some of those restrictions are changing soon due to MOSAIC (pilots later this year, aircraft next year).

If you want to travel a bit with it, private is a good place, but you definitely don't need to go to a "school" (they're geared towards career track).

And I know some of the newer smokers are just about as "set it and forget it" as you can get, but I also tend to think that the more steps and care you put in, the better the smoking will be...and I am just too dang busy on the weekends to usually have that time (or I'm too dang flighty).

I need time and discipline. Make the time, install the discipline.

I have a weber smokey mountain. Once I get the temperature where I want it to be I put the meat on and leave it for a couple hours before I open it up again. And that's just for a quick check to make sure things are good. I use the water pan which helps maintain moisture in the meat so I don't generally need to spritz. Otherwise I just leave it shut, maintain temp, and add wood as needed.

Depending on what I'm smoking I might take whatever it off to wrap but if I'm doing that I could put it in the oven. If it's wrapped it's not gonna take on any smoke flavor (and it's likely far along in the cook where it's not getting any additional smoke flavor anyway) so I wouldn't even need to maintain the temp any longer.

get yourself a wireless/bluetooth temperature sensor to make sure your temps are where you want them to be and check every now and then to see if you need to add more wood chunks. maybe want to spritz every so often, though that hasn't been necessary with the stuff I've done

The Adobe products go very very deep. One thing some e told me was to find something you tho k looks cool
and try to replicate the general idea, you wind up poking around and trying stuff.

I like the idea of creative displays of data, so I am going to try learning Tableau

He used to have a BBQ blog in the 90's, back before blogs were really a thing, and actually got offered a chance by a professor to sponsor him in getting his PhD in the geography of Texas BBQ. I can't believe he decided against it.

Wiring can be pretty simple. It just depends on the number of variables.

For example, tapping a junction box for an extra line is easy if the box isn't already full (that is, if there's room for your new wires). Lever connectors made this sort of work a lot easier.

If your amperage isn't close to maxing out, and the new line isn't going to be used for something that will overload the circuit, it's just like adding a power strip to your duplex receptacle.

The ubiquity of LEDs is already decreasing the load on your circuits.

But if you've got a wall switch with a traveler, you suddenly have a lot more variables to consider.

If I had to pick a narrow focus for that it'd be electrical.

Overall though it'd be great if I could do more projects myself. There's a good amount of home repair where the majority of the cost is just labor.

With read access you can't really hurt anything without trying.

Lots of free classes out there and it's easy enough to learn via trial and error. It seems real hard at the beginning but then it all starts to come together.

Stuff that took me a day to code when I started in BI I can probably knock out in 30 minutes now.

something like "max your Roth IRA, max the employer match on your 401k, invest it all in index funds" is all you really need to know. (assuming said schmo has the ability to max a Roth and/or 401k)
