Maiava screwed up by taking too long on the play before the FG, but they still had :05. From that close to the goal line, that’s enough time to at least try a quick hitter where you tell the QB to just throw it at the receiver’s feet if it’s not immediately open. And with our struggles in coverage, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they’d have gotten a TD.

College QB’s can do dumb stuff so I’m not saying it was an egregious decision or anything, but I think they could have run one more play.

they said that Feagin dived for the 1st and it looked to me like he landed at least a yard past the yellow line and then maybe bounced/slid a bit further after landing. the announcers never questioned the call, only said "I don't think he got it" after the officials spotted it and the clock was still running.

Since there was no replay I can’t say with 100% certainty that there wasn’t something we couldn’t see, but it seems like it would have had to defy the laws of physics to be possible.

Gus Johnson even says 1st down after the freaking play. Cost us almost 15 seconds.

to be fair time wasn't a concern for us. we had 2 minutes and 3 TOs

Bad spotting is maybe my biggest beef with B1G officials. They routinely have multiple egregious spots in about every game

the pass defense.

we've played some great offenses and QB's. granted. but it's been almost impossible for us to get off the field this year aside from opponent turnovers, and that's a scary game to play. I don't think it's sustainable to be a really good team and rely solely on forcing turnovers. you have to line up and beat some people sometimes, and we just so rarely do that.

on the plus side, nice rebound for the run defense, which I have much more confidence in.

the problem with that is, in those types of scrums how often do we ever get an angle good enough to overturn ANY call regardless of what it was initially? In those scrums the default should be down by contact and see on replay if there's any video that's clear of a takeaway.

That ball just came out so late compared to when the play was over, it never should have been ruled a fumble in the first place.

Forget if it was in this thread or different chats, but with officials letting the play finish

Mentioned below, USC needs to start playing Big Ten style football if they want to win in this conf

You can contrast how physical Oregon is to USC. Lanning is aggressive, but will punt the ball and play field position. USC was charmin soft defensively with 1:56 to play and we went 50 yards on the ground in no time (did get a 10 yard penalty). They just didn’t think we’d run the ball, they assumed it was 7 on 7 time.

Riley continues to play like it’s the Big 12 or PAC 12 and teams in this conference play defense and run the ball for 60 minutes.

They needed a TD not a FG. It would be ideal to slow play it, but you need to get in. Turnovers can happen down there, as we know well, so there’s risk to trying to game it. If you can get in, you get in. Same with us saying oh it’s better that Dixon got tackled so we can burn more clock. It was until it wasn’t.

When you’re playing for the FG, it’s a little easier to game the clock. TD is a little bit of a different beast.

Though I did say in a text thread just before USC scored that we should be bringing the house on every play. Either you put them in bad down and distance, force a turnover, or give up a TD. All reasonable results.

For one, the refs are instructed to let it play out if it’s close, which inherently biases the outcome towards remaining a fumble if the call on the field carries extra weight.

But on plays like that, there’s zero chance that the ref actually saw what happened in the scrum. He was guessing as much as any of us watching on TV. What he called on the field should not influence how the replay crew evaluates the play.

USC is a Top 5 offense. In raw numbers they averaged 9.5+ yards *per play* entering this game. Holding them to 10 in a half is a great effort.

The O deserves credit for retaining the ball, but that was a great half of D controlling for how good the USC O is.

we couldn't get off the field and forced no punts, but we made them run a lot of plays which shortened the game and caused one turnover.

the other part that helped us was our offense which also kept the ball a ton. if we were going 3 and out, it would look a little different i'd imagine.

4 key plays in that half, 3 went in our favor. USC fumble, USC downfield penalty, Feagin fumble, and

holding USC to a FG rather than a TD on that second down play. They had a TD and a FG in 4 possessions, we had 2 TDs in 3 possessions and get the ball first in the second half. All things considered, we are in a fortunate spot I'd say.
