Ok, I haven't listened in a couple of decades, but for a long time through high school, college, and beyond, late Sunday nights were reserved for the Dr Demento Show from under the Smogberry trees in Sheman Oaks, CA. Most well known for introducing the world to Weird Al Yankovic, Barret Hansen began broadcasting in 1970.

(Barret Eugene) Hansen created the Demento persona in 1970 while working at KPPC-FM in Pasadena, California. After playing "Transfusion" by Nervous Norvus on air, DJ "The Obscene" Steven Clean remarked that Hansen had to be "demented" to play it; Clean and Peter Wolf then devised a "mythical character" named Dr. Demento that would become Hansen's persona.
