I was a student worker there for a few semesters. Didn't do a lot work though. My three takeaways from my time there were:

1. My first introduction to a facsimile machine. My mind was blown.
2. Learning how to drive a forklift.
3. Walking off with a couple of fresh-off-the-pallet lead brick bats. They weighed something like 25 pounds each and were a fun challenge to people who wouldn't suspect something so small weighing so much.

Oops, misread. No... I don't think that was there.

I spent most of my academic time in NREL, which was in an alley off S Goodwin behind Ceramic Engineering....

Then there was the old nuclear reactor which was just behind the Physics building.

That Ceramics building was a gem when I had class at Loomis.

There’s a little courtyard-style parking lot in that building. I parked there from time to time. Sweet.

how long do you think it'll actually be until the reactor is at criticality for the first time? 5 years? 10? Ever?

My guess would be between 2030 and 2032

Recognizing there are a lot of moving parts. First of a kind design, Trump pressure on NRC for faster approvals, NRC is extremely busy for the foreseeable future.
