I am considering getting a massive TV. Like 90”+. What do I need to know?

Seems like limited model availability and a lot of brands that I typically think of as value brands (TCL, Hisense, LG).

Do I need to buy an OLED?

Are QLED and ULED needle movers or just a marketing ploy?

Best to wait until the Black Friday deals come out?

Whatever type of technology is out there now at that size (and is discontinued) is $32k and higher.

So they'll look best if you can control the lighting in the room. If you're watching mostly in a bright room during the daytime, it might not be the best choice. They're also very light which can be a bonus when you get to that larger size you're looking at.

microLED is the holy grail but doubtful it ever gets cost effective during it's window of opportunity.

Sony's always the safe choice IMO with their processing. If you feel like gambling then brands like Hisense have great value but also buyer beware.

They've improved the brightness but still not to the level of LED/LCD. And OLEDs have other strengths, too, like off-axis viewing, etc.

They’re not incapable of being in a room with light. Just won’t get as bright as LED *

I don’t know how far in the weeds you’ve gone on this, but in terms of tech, a side lit TV is exactly what it sounds like, the “bulbs” are on the side of the tv, essentially illuminating the entire panel at once, and then the LEDs in the screen either let that light through, or don’t, and that’s how the picture is made. Some regular LEDs may have individual back lit zones I think, as opposed to side lit, but if they do they are large, like measured in inches.

Mini LED has a bunch of individual lights (LEDs) all along the actual back of the screen itself. Thousands, or even tens of thousands, of individual lights. Then the screen itself is still deciding how much of that light comes through and what color, but the light itself is coming from tiny individual sources. This makes them able to have very high contrast, one because the individual lights are able to be very bright without impacting any other part of the screen, and two because if you want dark, you simply turn off that zone completely, as opposed to trying to block light from coming through. There’s no light to block. Lastly, and this is just my own personal feel, I think your eye is able to perceive the difference between something that is coming directly from a light source, as opposed to reflected light. (This is where OLED really shines because on a OLED each individual pixel is itself a light source). On a mini LED those backlights are pointed right at your eye. I think this makes the picture feel more realistic. When watching a football game, it feels more like sitting in the stands looking at an actual game, as opposed to watching a picture on a screen. But that’s just me.

kitchen even further away behind the couch. I love it, super glad I went with the larger size, and it never seems “too big” from the couch.

I had a 65” LG OLED before but 98” OLED is cost prohibitive.

I narrowed it down to the TCL mini LED (QM851) or the Bravia regular LED (x90L)

Bravia gets a ton of praise for its upscaling hardware / software. I really like the mini LED technology though. Great brightness, color, and contrast, and I find it gives a similar visceral “looking at something real instead of looking at a screen” feeling that OLED gives. Also it was like half the price of the Bravia, so even if I liked the Bravia better I wasn’t sure I could justify it. And I never saw anything that made me feel like the Bravia was better.

It looks spectacular with DTV....don't have a better source to try it with.

There's a 98" that's the same basic TV on Amazon for $1800.

Small sample size, I know, but I really like the one I got for work, and the 98 is just a bigger version of the one we got.

We bought a mid-range LCD TV for our basement TV (where mini plays XBox and Switch and sometimes watches TV) but it’s definitely a step behind (and substantially cheaper). If you are looking at a Smart TV platform, Sony uses Google TV which is pretty good and easy to use (though we have Apple TV boxes on all the TVs).

I’d stay away from Samsung only because they do not support Dolby Vision.

Might be easier to deal with. I got one for my basement since I wouldn't have been able to maneuver a tv around the corners to get it down there. I love it. Its set for a 103" picture now

Basically a component style box that goes right next to the wall where the screen is. So much less complications for installing but it's still fairly new to the market.

I have a traditional SXRD Sony PJ in my basement that's well past it's lifespan. Had been reading some about USTs but haven't done anything yet.

I got an Epson LS800 back in March

I really like it, though it does seem to have some occasional small issues. Like every now and then I’ll turn it on and it’ll run fine for a few minutes then randomly turn off, then once it restarts it’ll be just fine.

Or a more recent one…when the source switches from the default to the input 1, which is what I have my Apple TV plugged into, the entire picture gets shrunk into the top left quarter of the screen. But when I turn off the projector and turn it back on it’s goes back to filling the entire screen. This only started in the last 3 weeks or so and I think it’s an issue with the OS

Picture wise I think the middle of the screen is just a hair brighter than the edges, which I assume will be a common thing among all UST projectors due to the difference in distance from the source. But it’s barely noticeable and no one that I’ve had over mentioned it.

If you do end up getting a UST projector you’ll probably want to get an ALR (ambient light reducing) screen to use it with. It’ll help the brightness of the picture against any overhead lights
