I'm a few credits shy of my law degree but if Disney's plan is to force every other provider to pay significantly higher fees just so they can drive customers to their own service that seems like something that shouldn't be allowed.

my bill was set to re-new on the 3rd, so I cancelled YTTV and moved over to Hulu which we had for a while before moving to YTTV.

I'm sure the Hulu channel guide is customizable the way the YTTV guide was, I just haven't spent the time to figure it out yet. I miss having the channels lined up exactly how I wanted for easy viewing of games on Saturdays.

That said, on Hulu I like that the live sports adds in the ESPN+ content, so easier to watch there rather than backing out of an app and into another.

Sports in the middle of football season is about as important as you can get,” Johnston said. “So, I think from that perspective, we perhaps have some leverage as well, because there are other places people can go to get that sports.”

He also declined to address the outstanding issues that the two sides remain apart on.

“I’m just not going to comment on the various elements of the negotiation,” he said. “It’s a negotiation. There’s back and forth. They want certain things, you want certain things.”

“While we’ve been working tirelessly to close this deal and restore our channels to the platform, it’s also imperative that we make sure that we agree to a deal that reflects the value that we deliver, which both YouTube, by the way, and Alphabet, have told us, is greater than the value of any other provider,” Iger continued. “So we’re not trying to break new ground.”

Meanwhile, YouTube TV argues that Disney is asking them for a rate above what Charter and DirecTV pay for the ABC networks and to pay more for their content than what they charge the Hulu and Fubo, which recently completed its merger with Hulu + Live TV.

It added that it isn’t asking for better rates, but for size-based “most favored nations,” a contractual promise that a programmer will not offer better terms to any other distributor without offering the same terms them. It also disputed that the tailored programming packages are Disney’s proposal, noting that it’s a topic they’ve had conversations with all of their partners about.

from what I've seen/read here is what both sides seem to be asking for...

Disney wants Google/YTTV to carry all of their ESPN Unlimited programming on their basic tier and to pay more to do so.

Google/YTTV only wants to carry ABC and ESPN/ESPN2 on their basic tier since they argue those are the only channels people actually watch, and wants to pay less. They also apparently want a shorter length to whatever agreement they eventually come to.

I've also seen one or two things about YTTV wanting Disney to allow you to access Disney+ content via the YTTV app. their goal is to make YTTV the go-to interface to access all streaming content regardless of provider. Disney, obviously, doesn't want that especially since they now own both Hulu and Fubo

It's also worth noting that this is the 3rd time in the last 3 years that Disney has gotten into a carriage dispute with a provider that resulted in lost programming for a period of time. In 2023 they had a 10 day dispute with Charter and in 2024 they had a 14 day dispute with Directv

if anyone else has seen/heard any other details I'd be interested

As you are no doubt aware, last night YouTube TV pulled our channels from their service, prior to the midnight expiration of our deal, and with no advance notice to their subscribers, or to us. In doing so, they not only cut off access to our live programming but also deleted all previously recorded shows and events from their subscribers’ libraries. Their actions make clear how little regard they have for their customers and are consistent with an attitude which has been prevalent throughout our negotiations — YouTube TV and its owner, Google, are not interested in achieving a fair deal with us. Instead, they want to use their power and extraordinary resources to eliminate competition and devalue the very content that helped them build their service.

We are enormously proud of the work done by so many of you to create the highest quality and most compelling content. At ESPN and ABC in particular, we have made significant investments in programming, including the best line-up of live sports in the industry — bar none. On ABC alone, we have increased the number of live games by nearly 80% over the past several years. The lineup for this weekend is incredible and includes 13 of the top 25 college football teams on our platforms, a double header of NWSL games on ESPN, and leads right into Monday Night Football featuring the Arizona Cardinals vs. the Dallas Cowboys on ABC.

The bottom line is that our channels are extremely valuable, and we can only continue to program them with the sports and entertainment viewers love most if we stand our ground against tactics that threaten the integrity of our business and the value of our creative work. We are asking nothing more of YouTube TV than what we have gotten from every other distributor – fair rates for our channels.

first...this isn't just YTTV, it's also Disney wanting them to pay more, which in turn will mean customers paying more

second...people don't seem to grasp the difference between direct-to-consumer streaming (disney+, espn+, netflix, etc.) vs. cable provider via streaming (YTTV, Hulu Live, directv stream, etc.), which is no different than your traditional cable or satellite service except for the method it's delivered to your tv.

third...let's not pretend that direct-to-consumer services don't raise prices constantly. just a month ago I got a price increase on the disney+/hulu/HBO Max bundle, which goes back to my first point

yeah, it sucks that games will likely be missed because of this but let's put the blame where it really belongs.

Both sides could agree to an extension to prevent loss of programming. That happened with YTTV's recent negotiations with comcast/nbc. No idea why that didn't happen here.

Disney is asking for higher carriage fees. They raised prices on their standalone services just a month or so ago. They're going to get higher carriage fees eventually, just not to the level they're asking for now. And eventually YTTV will raise their pricing as well to cover those higher fees (along with those from Comcast, paramount, Warner, etc). In the end we all just end up paying more.

That's my point. It's not "one side is being unreasonable.". It's both sides are looking to make more money and we end up footing the bill

It used to be you had to have someone come in your house, wire it up for whatever service you had... and it was such a giant pain in the ass no one ever wanted to change. It's like having your rent raised, but not enough to deal with the hassle of moving.

You don't like who you're using? Cancel and switch. You already own the hardware, you already own the infrastructure in your house. It takes 30 minutes, tops.

The hilarious part was Disney trying to paint Google as the corporate boogeyman.*
