...vis a vis market size. I know SD is a big city by itself, but the SD area is more or less STL MSA in size.

That said, I wish STL ownership spent like that... it was nice to see a franchise stretch its capabilities to compete.

Also, Petco is a fucking terrific ballpark.

...everybody assumes all professional sports teams are impossibly rich, and have zero budgetary issues. They're still businesses, but with an extra 0 or 2 on the end for annual revenue, and carry insanely high expenses across the board. Surely, I'm not the only one here who spends a fair amount of his/her days projecting business performance and reviewing P&Ls.

I'm also not forgetting that they have incredible revenues - often not even directly their own - and some greedy fuck owners just pocket the money and screw over the people who keep them in business with a complete lack of any self awareness or remorse.

a) the fact that they don't disclose even close to what they actually make

b) their franchise values outpace that revenue dramatically

the pads were valued at $800M 13 years ago
this sale will likely be around $2B

...other than it's not cash until it's actually cash. The lack of transparency while crying poor annoys the shit out of me... but I also know none of this is as binary as it seems.

I'm sure all of the clubs have some kind of credit revolver of some astronomical figure that accounts for seasonality...

Anyway... the Pads were a club that were always considered a lower end revenue club until the past decade or so, and then all of a sudden they spent like the Dodgers for a few years... that was pretty cool...

Just seemed unsustainable, but IDK.

the enterprise value increased over 2x that much in the same time

that seems the opposite of unsustainable. it seems like great business

the pirates would probably sell for 1.5B. so spending nothing for years has actually been the BETTER business decision. they've done a better job of taking profit off the table while still increasing their franchise value

either actually being or pretending to be poor is almost assuredly the best business case

Better, indeed, to not spend and suck if value is going up regardless
