Not because of Maton’s abilities. I like Maton. His savant page was blood red last year.

The Cubs don’t sign relievers to multi year deals though. I am interested to see the financials on this.

Especially with the reporting that they weren’t interested top tier bullpen arms. The Cubs have been very successful in finding gems from nowhere. Pomeranz, Keller etc last years.

So I’m choosing to believe this means the Cubs are willing to expend some more resources than we believe. I’ll probably be burned on that but signing Maton to a multi year just doesn’t fit with the Cubs we’ve known.

Either that or they just really really wanted Maton and plan to use him in more unconventional ways.

Jonah Heim also non tendered. Could be a real nice backup catcher for a team

does have some offensive potential (last couple years he took a major step back) but his more know for defense and arm.
