I recently heard the famous Steven Pinker from Harvard complain that students are worse, do less work, often don't come to class, and expect As. And yet he says he goes along with the trend, because he can't fight it himself.

It annoyed him that Harvard has all these world-class professors and instructors, and students are less likely to engage and take advantage of them.

Not being able to do basic math even with an A in high school calculus class. Apparently UC eliminated test scores in the admission process a few years ago with predictable results.

I took a couple last year, and sure, there are some hard questions. But so many are so easy for anybody with basic skills. What are people learning if they can't reach the median?

An AP score of 3 as passing does not help. That proves little.

Apparently just spending an hour getting to know Desmos allows you to mostly guess your way above 700 on math and still have time left over at the end of the section to go back and double check.

I remember one question about intersections on the axes that was challenging to solve analytically. And then the answer explained how to do it with a calculator, at which point you could just read the graph. No kidding.

I think about taking formal classes online or in-person and wrestle with what I would do with it. For example, my son works for Duolingo, and I was taking one of its classes for a while, and dropped out because I had no way to use it.

Same with advanced programming in this or that, as another example. Then what?

But let's take UIUC's engineering class. When I attended, it was almost entirely in-state and almost all white. Now the percentage of out-of-state and foreign is far, far higher. The demographics changed considerably.

The SAT people have said that the tests have been re-normed because they are not absolute metrics. They are meant to reflect relative performance. So you can get more people at the high end when the test is easier for average takers.

Agree the GPAs seem hard to believe if it’s on a 4 point scale. Unless they are intentionally being super-selective for early admissions and deferring the majority of candidates, to boost their numbers.

That being said, I went from All Pro (probation) my first semester to Dean's List my final semester. 152 credit hours in 4 years.

To bonbon's point, they are recalculating by (probably) giving a boost to AP/IB/Honors classes.

does too. I don’t know how they do it but there’s no way the median kid with a 4.25 GPA has a 31 ACT. A 31 is a decent score but it’s not an outstanding score. A 4.25 is an outstanding GPA. So I don’t believe that those numbers are accurate, at least in terms of real world academics.

specifically about your son we have the same issue compounded by the move to a new school. mini’s freshman grades were similar to your kid’s. The light only went on for him when we talked to a college counselor who gave us the facts about his desired schools, including the number of AP classes kids were taking. Since then, his grades have improved substantially but are weighed down by the low early grades. The good news is that colleges weigh increasing trends and know that boys take more time to mature. There are rumors that some colleges will throw out freshman grades for boys.

For us, mini’s Pennsylvania school is highly rated but known for not pushing kids. They do not, for example, allow freshmen to take APs. So lots of kids in the Atlanta school have two more APs (the FR class and a Sophomore follow on) than him, helping with academic rigor scores and weighting. Also, the way the new school transferred his Pennsylvania grades, they reduce his GPA because of math reasons. Our college counselor helped craft an explanation of these issues.

On the good side, he’s at an inner city public high school and has some extra curricular activities that are not traditional for nerds like him. So I hope that’s going to help at some of these more selective schools.

I went to grad school there. And I was 30 when I graduated. But the urban setting and layout and decentralized student community were weird. The opposite of UIUC. I remember being put off by cheerleaders doing a pep rally on a little grass patch before everyone loaded on 693 yellow school buses and trucking down to Heinz field. The bars sucked between 5th and Forbes. Most crossed the river to head south to Pittsburgh’s general bar scene, which wasn’t very college like.

torinese gave him good advice a few years ago, so he's happy to pay it forard if any of your kiddos want to know the different vibes.

my take as an old, beloved is a more friendly and supportive place with better asian restaurants.

scUM is better at getting undergrades research opportunities even as rising sophmores. noobster was in the solomon lab for two summers and learned that he wants to be a lifer in discovering materials that can help society.

also, scUM has a much better coop housing situation. both noobgirl and nobster have thrived in these types of housing situatuons. it's an underrated education situation. they both learned so many life skills navigating the coop life.

The stupid house settlement killed pretty much any possibility of D1 except at maybe a few minor schools. Indoor season starts in January, and she's already doing well better than her PR (but still ~2 feet short of what the beloved coach wants).

Academic acceptance at Montana State, Colorado - Colorado Springs, Azusa Pacific (has a spot on the track team, but D3, former HS teammate goes here)

Apps into Purdue, UWashington, Auburn, UMass, Colorado School of Mines (probably her first choice).

UofCal schools are all one app, but not commmon app, but a bunch of those are going in this weekend (EA is 12/1). I think SD, Irvine, Santa Barbara, and maybe SLO.

It's crazy to me that app fees haven't changed in more than 30 years from when I was applying. Back then $50 was a nice steak dinner for 2. Today it barely gets you chipotle.

UVA, and George Washington. I think of those, Georgetown is the only one which sends decisions back before mid-January.

American and PSU are also on his list, but PSU requires some extra materials and is rolling admissions, while American doesn’t have EA.

Georgetown is his first choice but I don’t know if he’ll get in, or if we would be able to afford it if he does. Hard to justify any of the others over UMD, which is as good as any of them except UVA (and not far behind there) while being a third or a quarter the cost.

They were one of the schools that were significantly higher than I’d have guessed, along with BU.

Of course, flagship schools across the board are way more selective and have far higher admissions standards than they used to. I was pretty shocked at the average test scores for MD, Rutgers, etc., never mind the more prestige level schools.

Seems like Big Ten admissions standards are comparable to where the Ivy League was back when I was applying, while the top schools are pushing up against the limits of quantitative metrics like SAT scores or GPA, and are probably a lot more random in admissions decisions now. Which has probably fueled the huge increase in number of applications per kid, along with the common app making it a lot easier.

He took both twice. I think it’s manifestly unfair that wealthier kids are taking it more than 3 times. I think you should have to report how many bites you took of the apple. Even if you can still superscore.

how do I know this? Because there's absolutely no way the median admitted Auburn out of state student has a 4.25/4.00 GPA. Especially when correlated to that ACT score. Even the early action kids.
