Illini Basketball vs. Southern Pre-Game and Game Thread (2pm on BTN)

Will be interesting to see if Brad uses this game to get guys like Lee, Petrovic, and Jakstys going a bit more, or if his rotation is pretty set with the bigger roles for Davis and Humm-Daddy. We shall see.

Very honestly curious to see how many people are there today. I snagged tickets to this game weeks ago because all my kids would be home from school and they were dirt cheap (the tickets, not the kids). 2pm on a Monday is a weird time...lol.

Per Brad's PC yesterday:

Southern is an older team.
Southern will be picked to win their conference.
Southern will throw a bunch of different defensive looks out there.
Southern has one really good scorer and a good big guy.
Brad was very happy with our effort vs. Mizzou and we've had some good practices since.

As far as numbers go, Southern is #288 in the NET, so this is clearly a Q4 game for us at home. We are a 31 point favorite. Southern is 0-4 in Q1 games, 0-1 in Q2 teams, and 0-2 in Q3 games. Apparently they took Washington to overtime back in mid-November.

This is the first of a 3 game Q4/Q3 stretch vs. Southern, Penn State, and Rutgers. We need to win all three of these games to set us up for the next Q1 game at Iowa. Will be interesting to see if Brad uses this game to get guys like Lee, Petrovic, and Jakstys going a bit more, or if his rotation is pretty set with the bigger roles for Davis and Humm-Daddy. We shall see.

Michigan up 66-29 on KenPom #62 McNeese, annoyingly furthering their status as a certified wagon.

Meanwhile, MSU gave up 53(!) in the first half to KenPom #168 Cornell and is up 55-53.

With how competent the NCAA is, I'd say its possible.

Eh. Sometimes I think the urban schools like Minnesota, and the urban so-called schools like Rutgers should get the night games. Fans going home in the middle of winter don't have as many travel concerns. But TV ratings should bend towards the higher-ranked schools.

I think that's a problem long term and goes against what Underwood wanted to do when he came in. ON the other hand, our half court O is so efficient, it doesn't really matter - we get good shots and they tend to go in except against UConn.

work for a great open shot or mismatch to drive the basket, strong
rebounding, and a mediocre defense it seems like a smart strategy to control the ball, make the other team work to defend, break their spirits with offensive rebounds.

Per Brad's PC yesterday:

Southern is an older team.
Southern will be picked to win their conference.
Southern will throw a bunch of different defensive looks out there.
Southern has one really good scorer and a good big guy.
Brad was very happy with our effort vs. Mizzou and we've had some good practices since.

As far as numbers go, Southern is #288 in the NET, so this is clearly a Q4 game for us at home. We are a 31 point favorite. Southern is 0-4 in Q1 games, 0-1 in Q2 teams, and 0-2 in Q3 games. Apparently they took Washington to overtime back in mid-November.

This is the first of a 3 game Q4/Q3 stretch vs. Southern, Penn State, and Rutgers. We need to win all three of these games to set us up for the next Q1 game at Iowa.

Very honestly curious to see how many people are there today. I snagged tickets to this game weeks ago because all my kids would be home from school and they were dirt cheap (the tickets, not the kids). 2pm on a Monday is a weird time...lol.
