I fucking loathe the school, and I have to mentally prepare myself for one of my children to go there.

Cignetti may be, pound for pound, the best college football coach who ever lived. We’ll find out in about 3 years. At the same time, he figured this out about 10 years too late. Maybe 15. So he won’t set any official records other than overall winning percentage.

In the not all that distant future Cignetti will retire or decide to take a crack at the NFL. And IU will be in international waters. They won’t have the longevity to have made any real impact. They’re not Tennessee, Penn State, Alabama, Michigan, or OSU. They’ll hang a banner, and declare themselves a football school. Basketball will fall further behind with a nearly 40 year old banner that starts collecting social security soon and less money because it’s now football’s.

So for me, watching Cignetti doing what he’s doing is really hard to not be enamoured with. We are all witnessing something great and we have to acknowledge it. Do I wish it were at Syracuse and not IU? Yes. But it’s not. In a time when all we see is hot take bullshit, we’re being handed on a silver platter something genuinely great. We need to enjoy it. I don’t know when it will happen again.

But how is any of that good for Illinois?*
