none of which have anything to do with the original, other than the characters being in the USMC.

But wasn't the whole premise that it was a lot more boring than anticipated?

Being a professional warfighter is boring and corrosive to one's humanity, whether one experiences combat or not.

Each sequel got further from that premise.
