1, fewer plays means teams are trying to maximize plays. definitely a factor.

2, it was always hard for people that wanted to copy Art Briles Baylor and hurry up - it's hard to field 5 skill guys that can run and catch the football on the field at all times. So teams have gone back to bigger people on the field (TEs mostly) because it's easier to recruit that at Illinois, South Alabama, and about everyone in between.

3, college defenses figured out how to defeat the spread RPO by running 3-3-5 defenses making it harder to run spread offenses.

4 (related to 3), college offenses have eschewed under center for a number of reasons, mostly because they can't coach HS QB recruits to do it and time everything up in the pass game with the QBs footwork and WR route running. i think even moreso now in a transfer portal era where you can all but guarantee the starting QB is not a guy you recruited out of HS. being under center is harder, but it's also harder for the defense in play action. you are seeing NFL teams get back under center a lot more because it makes it much harder for DBs to read play action

i think there are two ways college offenses regain the upper hand, and they probably diverge because few teams can do both well. teams will pick one or the other.

one, they go true hurry up no huddle to get the college defenses out of all the simulated pressures that they can run from 3-3-5 personnel. i think this is less likely.

two, they start getting under center a lot more like in the NFL. under center with a TE, two TEs, or a fullback and a TE makes the defense get a lot more vanilla because they must account for more gaps. accounting for 8 gaps in the run game is just harder out of a 3-3-5 because you have to put smaller players at or near the LOS where they will get blocked by a bigger offensive player.

there's a third way that basically no one will opt for, and that is running some kind of true triple option from under center, either the I formation or the flexbone. why i think that gives them an advantage is the speed at which the FB hits the dive option. the dive option hits so fast that it essentially makes every defender a single gap player, and when someone is out of their gap - boom - huge play. it also forces defenses to be very vanilla. you can't drop a DL into coverage - he must play a run assignment because if he drops out on a fullback trap, boom, huge run play. Teams would put 9 in the box against Nebraska and they would still run for 500 yards. that kind of fell out of favor because if you run the ball and lose, people hate your fucking guts and you get fired. so coaches said fuck it, i'll throw it a bunch even though my QB can't read anything and i can't recruit 3-4 capable WRs to catch it. they still get fired, but at least the fans and big boosters think it is more aesthetically pleasing.

bottom line, the simulated pressures at the NFL and especially college level have the defense with an upper hand because they can really confuse the QBs reads in either the run, pass, or RPO game. offenses will have to figure out how to get defenses out of that. staying in 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 RB on 90% of the plays has got college offenses in a rut, IMO.

you see some teams run a "triple option from spread" but it rarely works. the dive option has to hit FAST for the triple option to work. if you are back in the shotgun (West Virginia, Liberty under Chadwell, a few others) are trying this, but it just doesn't work as well. the dive back has to hit fast to get the defense to play it in a way that will open up big running lanes. it just doesn't hit fast enough out of the shotgun to really get the LBs, DEs, and Safeties flying up to the wrong guy. also being in shotgun forces your OL to hold blocks longer when that dive doesn't hit quick from under center.

As an Illini football fan, we've had some up years since Mike White was on the sidelines, but those years are overwhelmed by the seasons with blah (at best) results; with our administration having a "eh, who cares about football?" attitude.

With that said... we weren't the worst in the conference. But now, within two-three seasons, IU has a parade. Reminiscent of the Bobby Knight years I've seen.

The only comfort (and it's small comfort) is that in these times, campus heroes ain't what they used to be. Here one season-gone the next.

I think the way I reationalize this is more like how a Pacers fan in the 90s felt. We should feel good about where we are, and we really don't want to feel good for our rival to the west, but what we're watching is objectively great. Do I wish this was happening at any number of mid to bad football schools in the ACC? Yes, absolutely. I would take great joy in watching Curt Cignetti, head coach of Syracuse or Pitt, absolutely body slam Clemson, Notre Dame, and the SEC regularly. But this could never have happened at those schools. Two conditions had to be met, and almost completely contradictory to each other. They had to have the Big Ten or SEC money, AND the fans had to give so little of a shit that when the AD comes out and says we're hiring the guy from James Madison, the entire fanbase went, "Cool, did you see that 5* Point Guard from Warren Central? He'll look good in candy stripes."

I'm super annoyed the "Got Gordon" kids are getting this joy. And the guys that gave us this:

If there was any chance I was going to root for the opposition, it pretty much exploded when the Miami players were cheap-shotting IU. I had to sit next to Tennessee fans while they were body slamming us and booing our injuries. Miami being on that other side of the field... I just couldn't do it.

It's such an outrageous turnaround that it's hard for me to get angry about it

It's like being mad at someone for winning the Powerball. IU had a one in a billion kind of a season.

I'm far more bitter about never winning a title in basketball than I am in football. Regardless of what IU just did, it's still a totally unrealistic goal for Illinois in football. It actually feels possible in basketball.

IU is so RPO-heavy, which usually doesn’t translate well. But Mendoza shows he can make quick decisions and be accurate.

He can’t do 3rd and 4th progressions and create off script. He’s Kirk cousins, not Caleb Williams.

Also, I think I read that scouts aren't sure about his decision-making. This offense is designed for him but they question his ability to adjust/read NFL defenses and make correct decisions beyond 1st/2nd read (like VIV says above).

Don't get me wrong. He's good. Very good. Just not sure I want my franchise to stake its future on him...so many holes right now and a theoretically better QB class next year.

My current fixation watching the WMU - Illinois film is the snap count. I'm consistently seeing a tell where if it's a dummy count, Altmyer keeps his hands up vs when the actual snap is coming he will drop his hands to prep receiving the ball.
