Sure you can just pour the Rotel directly out of the jar onto your taco if you want, but there's an expectation here of doing it up for the occasion. So individual serving bowls, spoons, and tongs for at least ten items. Because you don't just want everyone shoving their hands in the cheese bags. It makes a better presentation and it has better utility value. If I was preparing this meal I'd probably have even a few more items than what she's listed.

All the individual little components of a DIY taco bar make it a more complicated meal than you'd anticipate = society is fucked.

A full taco bar with a decent selection of toppings is not a particularly quick meal, although it has that reputation. It’s not beef bourguignon, but as noted, it’s still significantly more work than a basic protein/starch/veggie dinner, for almost any values of protein, starch, and veggie.

Of course, I hate to cook and think probably 90% of recipes you see labeled as “quick” or “easy” are waaaaay more work than I ever in my life want to spend on a meal.

I do half-assed tacos where I just fill a couple of shells with meat and lettuce and cheese for everyone and it’s easy. But the tweet was talking about a full range of toppings with 3 or 4 requiring dicing, and all put out in serving dishes which is more work filling and then cleaning afterwards.

Throw the ground beef and seasonings in the pan, chop up some lettuce, onions and tomato and then pull everything else out of the fridge and throw on the island.

Used to get emailed coupons on UberEats for something like 60% off or 75% off - by the time you added fees and tip, etc it made things just about the same price as going to get it myself.

Think they figured out I only ever ordered using those discounts because they stopped being sent.

I can't really cook for that. If I am eating in, I will often do precooked meat or pasta and fruits/veggies, but even that isn't much cheaper.
