got a pair of tickets to the tournament, seems very likely at least one of Iowa State or Illinois will be there (hopefully both) but I think we're committed to the trip either way.

* any suggestions on things to do for the off day downtown or around St. Louis

* weather permitting we might bring our bikes, any suggestions for saturday? I'm pretty adventurous but she might not want to ride through sketchy areas. A 15-25 mile loop with scenery and/or a couple of good stops would be ideal.

* I see St. Louis City SC has a game Saturday night. What's the vibe for those? Fun times? is sitting in the supporter section worth it?

I’d go there and then hit up union loafers for lunch.

If biking around town make sure you are very cautious. StL drivers are oblivious.

We went all the time when I was in high school in Normal, but hadn’t been back there in maybe 20 years.

One of the saddest displays of urban blight/decay I’ve ever seen.

Probably head east in Iowa to start, then start heading south. 61 gets you to where I-70 and I-64 join; you can straight up avoid 70 and go on 64, which is what you want for St. Louis anyway.

Bonus, plenty of small/easy stuff to stop at if you dislike long drives as I do. Illiniwek Village historic site, Hannibal/Mark Twain, WAKONDA! (state park)...

Forest Park is bikeable, about six miles per loop. You can bike from the park, head east to the Arch and back and get to about 12 miles (+6 more at the park). Lindell Blvd is pretty decent to bike (e: I change this to "ok"), not a ton of traffic on weekends, but keep your head up anyway. Heavy Riff brewing is on the south side of the park and has/had good darker beers.

If you want to drive for biking, Grants Trail is a paved trail with few road crossings. A popular trail for runners, too, because it's protected, so you'll likely weave around people.

If you want to venture out a little, the Katy Trail is gravel and you'd also have few interruptions. There are cafes and at least one brewery on the St. Louis end of the trail (Good News). I think Good News is right about 10 miles out from a Katy Trail trailhead in St. Charles.

Best of the Best:
Side Project- Legitimately world class stouts, barleywines, and sours/wilds. Also execute lagers and IPAs very well.
Perennial- Just a half step below Side Project. Does everything at a very high level.

Does everything well:
Narrow Gauge- Known for some of the best hazies outside of Boston but does all styles well.
2nd Shift- Not really known for any one style. Does everything between "good" and "excellent." I've put them slightly ahead of the next 4 for their versatility.

Make their niche exceptionally well:
Civil Life- 95% of what they make are English pub beers and they are excellent at what they do.
Blue Jay- Now we hit the "European Lager House" portion of the list. They make like 8 beers. 7 of them are euro lagers and those are all out of this world.
Urban Chestnut- Focused on German lagers and they do those incredibly well. They try to branch out into other styles, and it loses me. As long as you stick to their wheelhouse, they don't miss.
Great Heart- A newer entrant. Only been around 1 year. Focuses on Bohemian & Bavarian beers and does an excellent job.

Does a bit of everything, and it usually hits:
Modern- Ranges from excellent to just ok. Has a fantastic location and a nice patio with good food.
Bluewood- Very similar to Modern for me but Modern has had some higher highs.
Rockwell- Even more inconsistent than the two above. Also had some problematic folks that are now gone.
Millpond- Our first IL side entrant. I've liked everything I've had there. Consistently good.

Others I've had a bunch and generally like:
Square One- Beer is fine. Has the best patio in STL.
Schlafly- The OGs. Makes solid middle of the road beer. Will never really be wowed or disappointed by anything they make.
Heavy Riff- Does a bit of everything. It a bit hit or miss.
4 Hands- Has some high highs but also has some crazy bad lows. Because they're larger and they scale things up, if they make a test batch of something good, the larger batch will be made cheaply and will be significantly worse.

Ones I've been to once or twice or had their beer enough at festivals to have an opinion (in order):

I always recommend City Museum for out of towners. It'll make you feel like a kid again. The zoo is also excellent (and free!).

For biking, you'll definitely want to check out Forest Park. It's massive with tons of trails and is beautiful. Going from downtown through midtown and central west end to forest park is perfectly safe as long as you stay south of washington/delmar.

There are tons of great breweries if you're into beer. I can definitely give recommendations there. Also, let me know what you're looking for when it comes to food. Happy to give recommendations there.

City games are great. I've got season tix and the games are loud and fun. Supporter's section stands all game. There are no "seats". All the food vendors are local restaurants.

Only supporters section doesn't have seats. Rest of stadium has seats.

Second Balkan Treat Box. For in stadium BBQ, get the Pork steak sammich at Beast (HI JACKIE!).

Stop in City Pavilion across Market from the stadium for merch.

Other than that, I have no STL recs other than golf as I'm a hermit and a teatotaler and generally don't like people or fun.

Forest Park is a great place to ride bikes. You might need to loop to reach that distance but plenty of cool landmarks and extending the ride up through Wydown Blvd and around WashU is cool

My favorite brewery near downtown is Blue Jay Brewing. Great beer, cool space and patio and they have a restaurant in residence with an awesome smash burger.

The Foundry is a food hall with lots of good options and a bar. The area also has shops and a cocktail bar.

CITY games are blast and a cool atmosphere. Not a bad seat in the house. All the food in stadium is local - try Balkan Treat Box

For a nice dinner, check out Indo, Little Fox, Extra Wavy. Katie’s Pizza at Ballpark Village is also a good option directly downtown
