Bedard was good from the jump. He’s much better now and his sophomore season was not as good as his rookie year.

Comparing Nazar to Bedard is unfair .

Nazar hasn’t been good. They gave him a big contract. He’s 4 years now post draft.

Yeah he’s still young but he was rewarded who’s now reaching the point where it’s fair to evaluate what he’s becoming and he’s been bad for the most part this year.

This is year 4 of the rebuild. We’ve had patience

And the next closest has 34 points to his 52.

He hasn’t been good this year, though he definitely was before getting injured (twice). And there are reasons to be skeptical about his upside after what we’ve seen this year, I certainly am.

But I go back to the broader discussion below, I still feel like your timeline expectations are off here. You say he’s 4 years post draft like that’s a long time, but in hockey it’s just not. Only 9 players in his entire draft class have played more than 100 NHL games so far, and he himself hasn’t even hit that threshold yet. Yes we can start to make judgments on players based on what we have seen, but it’s still incredibly early.

When this full tear down started, I remember listening to a lot of smart hockey people talk about how there’s almost no precedent for this full of a tear down actually working. And the big reason was because of just how long it takes players to even get to the NHL after you draft them, and from there it’s usually a few years before they’re actually good.

Even with the Bedard luck, I saw a lot of people tempering expectations and saying this is probably a 5-6 year process before being competitive even if they hit on most of their picks. Now you can certainly argue that if something is going to essentially punt that many seasons then it’s not the right thing to do. But if the organization accepted that path, year 4 is not the year to proclaim that it’s not working. We still haven’t seen (or barely seen) a bulk of the top prospects (Frondell, Vanacker, Kantserov, Lardis, Nestrasil, Boisvert, etc.) and the ones that are here haven’t played a full season of games yet other than Bedard.

Next year absolutely needs to show clear signs of progress.

But it’s completely fair to evaluate his performances especially after being given a 7 year contract 4 years out from his draft year.

But I’m also not a White Sox fan so I haven’t been conditioned to give 7-8 years to rebuilds to hope for some sort of relevance.

For giving up an elite penalty killer, retaining half the salary, taking on a $3.6M cap hit that EDM was desperate to give up for next year, and giving up an at least mildly interesting young player, this feels like a better deal for Edmonton than Chicago.

Still good to get a 1st for Dach and 1 month of Dickinson though, hopefully not a repeat of this unexpected Panthers season when it comes to the protection.

Is he sloooooow playing the rebuild? Seems so but aside from trading for more established talent, not sure what else he should be doing. no one good makes the FA market these days so there haven't been a lot of great options like Hossa was once upon a time.

For the amount of assets they’ve acquired they should be better.

He lucked into Bedard.

I’m intrigued by Frondell and Kantserov but outside of that it’s not looking great. It looks like they have missed badly with Levshunov (especially with how Demidov has looked).

He’s been great at tearing down and acquiring assets. His ability to identify talent and acquire talent has left a lot to be desired.

Guys are still young but they’re gonna need to kick it into gear and his other acquisitions have been pretty meh.

He needs to hit on another star player with all this capital they’ve had, so I agree it hasn’t been exceptional. But I certainly wouldn’t say bad.

Moore and Nazar are at least decent picks for where they were selected, though admittedly I’m a bit worried about Nazar (and my decision to pick him for the new jersey I bought).

Vanacker and Nestrasil look like really good last 1st round value as of now.

Even if they don’t pan out, Kantserov and Lardis are steals based on where they were drafted and what they’ve done since.

Rinzel is as far along as you’d expect a raw late 1st round defenseman to be by now.

Vlasic was good 2nd round value and Crevier and Kaiser were late round steals.

And I wish they took Demidov but it’s way too early to write off Levshonouv. Also Demidov has 12 goals in 59 games this year, good assist numbers but he’s not exactly playing like the mega prospect that they thought he would be when he got called up last year.

Korchinski looks like a bad miss though.

Levshunov shouldn’t be in the NHL currently

It’s a bad miss for a guy you took #2. He has a long way to go.

Nazar has scored 2 goals since October. They gave him a huge contract.

They’ve had ten 1st round picks not to mention the cap space and they haven’t been able to produce anyone to play on Bedard’s wing in 3 years.

It’s pretty poor track record. This team should be better. Not once again one of the worst teams in the league looking like they have zero talent.

Yes guys are still young but they’re gonna need to start producing soon. Davidson should be on the hot seat if they don’t get results soon.

Agree it has to be better soon, but I think next season is when we can really judge

Nazar, Levshonouv, and Rinzel will have had appropriate time to show what they are.

Frondell will be here. Should know if we have anything with Lardis and/or Kantserov.

But when a lot of the 1st round draft picks we’ve had aren’t even in the NHL yet, it seems a little premature to say that he hasn’t done enough with those picks.

Next year will be Davidson’s 6th season as GM

His fifth season since they tanked for Bedard.

And it’s not like he’s been drafting primarily in the back end of the 1st round.

Someone besides Bedard should be stepping up by now but no one has taken any leap and his veteran acquisitions have been mediocre.

Donato and Bertuzzi have been his best acquisitions and neither are top end production

It’s put up or shut up time imo

I’m agreeing that they have to be a lot better next season. That is the cutoff point for me.

This season was one year too early based on where all the good prospects were at in their development, which is why the October-November play was so surprising/encouraging. Just a bummer they couldn’t sustain those first two months at all, injuries or not they can’t end up in this spot again next year.
