Sherlock book question…I never read any of them

Is it cannon that moriarty was his homeboy back in the day or is this just Guy Ritchie doing his thing for the show?

The tv show is based on Young Sherlock books which is a YA series written in the 2010s*

Watson meets Sherlock in the first Doyle book as an adult.

Moriarty is only actually in two books. Became much bigger deal in afterwards much like the pipe and hat which aren’t in the books.

There’s also no sister. Not sure why every show now shoehorns a sister in.

The stories are written by Watson, who would like to know more about Holmes, but finds his roommate coy and mysterious.

On a couple of occasions, Holmes tells him about an adventure from his youth, e.g. The Musgrave Ritual.
