Wife won her company's sales reward trip so we'll be there for 7 days in April (10th-17th). We're staying in the Wailea area. We have a morning snorkel scheduled as part of our group activities, and may try to do a whale watching trip, but other than that nothing planned.

all off the top of my head...

the crater is a cool excursion, which may be where you are already going to snorkle.

kihei has a surf school at the public park/beach. And a food truck park with a paia fish market nearby. lots of good places especially south maui fish: https://share.google/MonwJbMq3gOqld8nY

if you plan to do sunrise at haleakala, go the first full day that you're there (easier to get up before getting used to local time).

try to get a spot at the bar at mama's since there's likely not reservations a month out. or go to paia fish house (not the same, but good).

do the road to hana...in fact, try to drive as much of the costal roads as possible. last time we went we got a big truck (only rental left) and that turned out amazing. it was so big that i didn't worry about the delivery trucks on the narrow roads.

especially between the blowhole and kahului on the NE shore of west maui and the road on the south side of haleakala. i would not recommend those unless you really enjoy single lane roads for two way traffic with steep dropoffs on one side.

Car company ran out of cars and it was the only one they had.

I was luckily going north, so had the mountain to my right, but was terrified I was going to drive someone off the road.

Ended up having to reverse into open spaces several times.

It’s a cove beach, beautiful, right next to kapalua which is its more famous cousin, but we actually preferred napili.

We did a snorkel boat tour with a really good company called Trilogy. Nice boat, well organized, perfect amount of time. Would recommend.

Road to Hana is good, but it has its drawbacks. Parking at certain spots gets crazy and you have to skip certain ones if you weren’t there early. I personally got sick from all the hairpin turns. And it is a lot of time in the car. I’m personally glad I did it, but my recommendation for it is only moderate.

I second miso phat sushi. I was not able to get mamas fish house reservations and I looked over 2 months in advance. So you might already be out of luck there.

Mama's Fish House. Get reservations now. Might already be booked up.

SunSET at Haleakala. Not sunrise. Just as beautiful and you don't have to get a permit and get up at 3am and ruin your whole day.

Kam 1 beach is my favorite on the whole island. Ho'okipa beach if you want to see sea turtles (up near Mama's).

Tin Roof (takeaway) for Hawaiian food in Kahului.

You're at the end of whale season, but I'd still go on a whale watch. They're great.

Miso Phat for sushi.

Thai Me Up food truck for Thai food.

Monkeypod for a mai tai.

Tikehau Lounge for cocktails, too. They've got the best 1944 mai tai (less sweet than a regular mai tai) and rum cannonball.

Also loved Ester's Fair Prospect for drinks.

Maui brewing is good.

The town of Lahaina is still essentially closed from the wildfire, which is a shame. That was my favorite spot. Ka'anapali beach is still there and busy as hell. It's a lot of mega resorts.

For that to just be gone is so sad.

Up that way, there's a miso phat sushi, there's a great little bakery (Pau) and a fish restaurant. then all the shit that's in the resorts and in whaler's village. they did put a maui brewing next to the beach in one of those resorts. that was pretty nice. but ka'anapali is such a pain in the ass.

we drove to kihei a bunch. having the new bypass highway was a massive improvement for traffic.

if you know that area north of ka'anapali, there's the main highway and then just after the string of resorts stops, there's lower honoapiilani (sp?) road that splits off left and goes closer to the coast. there's that slappy cakes breakfast place and the grocery store behind it. there's a food truck court across from the grocery store on the other side of the road.

Closer to Ka’anapali. We’ve stayed in that area 5x now. Always a good amount of VRBOs to rent on the ocean away from the resorts.

it's hard to go wrong with any of the fish spots on the island as long as they're getting fresh stuff. paia fish market, kihei fish house, etc. We went to South Maui Fish Company and it was fantastic grilled fish with rice in a takeaway container for like $20. they also have really good poke.

obviously, if you can get into mama's, that's the best spot. it's another level but eat as much local fish as you can.

also, just go to the kihei food oasis a couple of times. it's like 15 food trucks and they're all really good (that's where the closest thai me up is for you). we ate there three times last time we went.

That was a lot of fun and very memorable. I had to get out at 1 AM so even earlier :-p

Lahaina old town was amazing and it's a tragedy that it burned down for a lot of reasons.

For Road to Hana, get one of the downloadable apps with GPS cues since there's not great cell service. The one we used was fantastic but I can't remember which one it was.

We went to monkeypod Wailea multiple times during our trip. Good food and felt slightly less price gouged than the resorts

Paia Fish Market is cool.
