Dumb college question—how do you actually get student loans?

You read all these stories about people graduating with $100k in student loans. But the financial aid packages Sprout has gotten only include like $4-5k in loans through the school. So where are people getting additional loans? Do you just shop around at banks? Are there specialty lending orgs?

Solid LAM! Also I think that colleges are giving you federal subsidized loans in the FAFSA

I think you have to go to private lenders for the rest? I actually have the same question but that’s my guess. I have a related question though, how do you play colleges off each other?
